Fear of defeat from Amethi, Rahul Gandhi moves to Raebareli; Smriti Irani prepares for re-election

Rahul Gandhi is not contesting from Amethi in the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 after he had to bite the dust in 2019 as he was defeated by Smriti Irani, who was BJP’s candidate. It has been confirmed that now Rahul Gandhi will be filing his nomination from another Gandhi stringhold that is Raebareli

Bringing an end to all kinds of speculation, the Congress party has finally announced that Rahul Gandhi will contest the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections from Raebareli leaving the Amethi seat vacant. This move departs from the longstanding tradition of the Gandhi family contesting from both constituencies.

The decision to field Rahul Gandhi from Raebareli comes after Sonia Gandhi recently vacated the seat, opting instead to represent the Rajya Sabha constituency. Meanwhile, the BJP has already named Uttar Pradesh minister Dinesh Pratap Singh as its candidate for the Raebareli seat, setting the stage for a high-stakes electoral battle.

In a surprise twist, the Congress has nominated Kishori Lal Sharma as its candidate for the Amethi seat. However, Sharma has refrained from commenting on his nomination, fueling speculation about the party’s strategy for the constituency.

Amethi and Raebareli have long been considered strongholds of the Gandhi family, with both seats witnessing intense political contests over the years. Smriti Irani’s victory over Rahul Gandhi in Amethi during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections was a significant blow to the Congress, highlighting the shifting political dynamics in the region.

Speculation was rife that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra might contest from Raebareli to assert the Gandhi family’s political relevance in Uttar Pradesh. However, Priyanka’s decision not to contest has ended these speculations, signalling a shift in the party’s electoral strategy.

The Congress sees the decision to field Rahul Gandhi from Raebareli as a strategic move, considering the constituency’s historical significance and its enduring connection to the Gandhi family.

Shehzad Poonawalla took to X to express his views on the recent developments in the Congress party. He criticised Rahul Gandhi’s decision to abandon the Amethi seat and field KL Sharma instead, suggesting that it demonstrates the party’s lack of confidence in facing Smriti Irani. Poonawalla also questioned the sincerity of Congress’s commitment to Raebareli, implying that Gandhi’s move reflects a “use and throw” mentality.

All this drama & build up for what?

With Rahul Gandhi running away and surrendering out of Amethi & fielding somebody like KL Sharma, it is evident that Congress has given up on Amethi.

They too realise that Rahul stands no chance in front of Smriti Irani

So they sent him to…

The Congress’s ticket announcement comes amidst a flurry of political activity in Uttar Pradesh..The decision to field Rahul Gandhi from Raebareli has raised questions about the party’s electoral strategy and the future of the Gandhi family’s political legacy.

The upcoming elections in Amethi and Raebareli will likely be closely contested, with both parties vying for supremacy on these two seats. The BJP’s campaign strategy in Amethi and Raebareli revolves around portraying Rahul Gandhi’s decision to switch constituencies as a sign of weakness while highlighting the party’s commitment to fielding local candidates deeply rooted in the region.
