The Ministry of Labour and Employment is taking steps to transform the eShram portal into a comprehensive platform by consolidating all Government schemes related to the unorganised sector workforce in India. eShram, which is India’s largest national database of unorganised sector workers, presently holds information for 295 million individuals, including migrant labourers, domestic workers, self-employed individuals, and small shopkeepers. Besides registration, such workers receive a Universal Account Number linked with their Aadhaar details. This makes the portal a hub for delivering social security benefits to this demographic.
The Government is in discussion with 14 central ministries about putting this plan into action. An inter-ministerial meeting with representatives from ministries, including rural development, farmers’ welfare, housing and urban affairs, agriculture, skill development, and entrepreneurship, was recently held to discuss this initiative. The aim is to integrate approximately 600 Union Government schemes with a combined outlay of Rs 15 lakh crore onto the eShram portal. This integration aims to make it easier for workers to get the benefits they need, as it can be difficult to use different websites for different schemes. Once everything is integrated, workers will be able to see which schemes apply to them and sign up easily. This will help ministries deliver benefits to the right people and use resources better.
Presently, workers who are registered on the eShram portal can easily access a list of 1,700 schemes and determine their eligibility. Additionally, the eShram portal has already been linked with the One Nation One Ration Card scheme. This makes it easy to identify people and give them ration cards using eShram information.
An official emphasised that this integrated model could extend to other schemes as well, which will leverage the data from the eShram portal to identify and match beneficiaries for various programs. The portal also makes it easier for workers to search for jobs with the National Career Service. After a successful test run, the ministry believes the portal will work on a bigger scale and help India’s unorganised sector workers by making it easier to get Government schemes and services in one place.

“Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” (Collective Efforts, Inclusive Growth) mantra of Prime Minister Modi resonates strongly with this initiative. Adding 600 Union Government schemes to the eShram portal, with an estimated total of Rs 15 lakh crore, shows that the Government is committed to making sure these benefits reach the people who need them the most. This initiative doesn’t just make it easier to access the schemes but also helps deliver them to the right people. It ensures that the resources are used well to improve the lives of millions of workers and their families.
Furthermore, linking the eShram portal with the One Nation One Ration Card scheme shows how the Government uses technology for social welfare. This connection makes it easy to identify people and give them ration cards, which are crucial for many in the unorganised sector.
