Guwahati: The first phase of Lok Sabha Elections across North East India concluded today on April 19, marking a significant milestone in the democratic process. Despite sporadic incidents of violence in certain trouble-hit areas of Manipur, overall, the region experienced a peaceful electoral exercise.
The voting process encompassed 15 Lok Sabha constituencies in the North East, including 5 in Assam, 2 each in Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, and notable attention was paid to Manipur, where the inner constituency was contested alongside 15 Assembly segments. Additionally, Sikkim, Mizoram, Tripura, and Nagaland each saw polling for one Lok Sabha seat.
In tandem with the Lok Sabha elections, Assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh (50 seats) and Sikkim (32 seats) were also conducted simultaneously, adding to the complexity and significance of today’s electoral proceedings.
Assam emerged as a frontrunner in terms of voter turnout, boasting a remarkable 74.77 per cent participation rate, with expectations of a slight increase in the final count. Conversely, Mizoram registered the lowest turnout at 53.96 per cent, prompting reflections on the necessity for enhanced civic engagement in the state.
The electoral landscape across the northeastern states varied significantly, with Tripura recording a robust turnout of 76.10 per cent while Nagaland reported a comparatively lower figure at 56.18 per cent. Manipur and Meghalaya witnessed participation rates of 68.62 per cent and 69.91 per cent, respectively, underlining the region’s diverse electoral dynamics.
Despite the overall peaceful conduct of polling operations, isolated incidents marred the process in certain districts, including damage to Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and reports of attempted voter intimidation. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Manipur, Pradeep Jha, indicated a preliminary turnout of approximately 67%, with expectations for a potential increase pending final reports from all districts.
Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim witnessed respectable turnout percentages of nearly 65 per cent and 68 per cent, respectively, reinforcing the region’s commitment to democratic participation.
As the first phase of elections draws to a close, attention now shifts to the ensuing phases, with anticipation building for continued civic engagement and the expression of democratic rights across Northeast India.
