In a disconcerting turn of events, on Sunday, April 7, the tranquil atmosphere of Araria district, Bihar, was shattered as a Hindu temple fell victim to vandalism, just days before the commencement of “Chaitra Navratri,” escalating existing communal tensions in the region. The confrontation between the two sides prompted a substantial police presence to take control of the volatile situation.

A First Information Report (FIR) in this case has been registered and the investigations are underway.

The incident unfolded in Phulkaha Police Station area, specifically in the Bhangahi village panchayat, home to Bhaundhar Madhya Vidyalaya, a government school where a temple nestled within the premises serves as a revered place of worship for the Hindu community. Reports emerged on April 9, as locals discovered the desecration of the sacred site, sparking immediate outrage and exacerbating communal sentiments.

A village resident, who wished to remain anonymous told the media, that the temple, dedicated to Maa Bhagavati, holds particular significance during Navratri for the Hindu community. The desecration occurred during a period when the school was not in session, with unidentified perpetrators defiling the idols, igniting a fire on the hearth, and purportedly consuming mutton on the temple grounds. Additionally, offensive graffiti was discovered, adding fuel to the already inflamed situation.

A video from the protests can be seen here.

The police officials responded to the distressing development, deploying officers to the scene to disperse the gathering and restore order. Dialogue ensued between senior members of the two sides, resulting in the de-escalation of tensions. The aggrieved Hindu community lodged a formal complaint, urging authorities to pursue the perpetrators rigorously.

The Araria Police has initiated an investigation into the matter, registering a formal complaint and initiating efforts to apprehend those responsible. Concurrently, the Bihar Police has issued advisories cautioning against the spread of rumours and maintaining vigilance amidst the heightened tensions in the village. The police officials remain stationed in the area to monitor the situation closely and prevent any further escalation of communal strife.
