As the political landscape in Tamil Nadu heats up in anticipation of the upcoming elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a high-voltage poll campaign with the active participation of national party leaders. On Sunday, the party’s national head, JP Nadda, embarked on a whirlwind canvassing tour across various constituencies in the state, rallying support for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidates.
In his impassioned speeches, Nadda launched scathing attacks on the DMK-led alliance, particularly targeting the DMK, which he dubbed “dynasty, money swindling, and katta panchyat (Kangaroo courts).” He emphasised the BJP’s commitment to Tamil culture and civilization, contrasting it with what he alleged as the destructive agenda of the Congress and DMK.
While Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Tamil Nadu for the seventh time this year, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had to cancel his tour due to pressing engagements. Nevertheless, other prominent leaders, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Minister Parashottam Rupala, and Minister of Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur, have been actively campaigning for BJP-led NDA candidates across various constituencies.
The BJP’s strategy involves mobilising all available resources, including the presence of Union ministers, to capitalise on the popularity of PM Modi and leverage the perceived anti-incumbency sentiment against the DMK and its allies. With the emergence of Annamalai as a popular figure among Tamil Nadu voters, the BJP aims to secure a double-digit number of seats in the upcoming elections.
Nadda’s campaign speeches underscored the alleged corruption and dynastic politics within the opposition bloc, while highlighting the BJP’s achievements over the past decade, including initiatives such as Make In India and efforts to promote Tamil language and culture.
Despite facing obstacles such as denial of permission for rallies due to traffic concerns, the BJP’s campaign has garnered significant support, with large numbers of party workers turning out to attend events and welcome national leaders with enthusiastic displays, including bursting crackers and showering flower petals.
The BJP’s vigorous campaign efforts signal its determination to make significant inroads in Tamil Nadu politics and emerge as a formidable force in the upcoming elections. With a focus on highlighting the alleged failures of the opposition and showcasing its own vision for the state’s development, the BJP aims to rally voters around its agenda and secure a strong electoral mandate.
