The CBI Special Court in Lucknow delivered a long-awaited verdict on Friday, March 29, concluding a legal battle spanning over two decades in the murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal. The court found all seven accused guilty, with six sentenced to life imprisonment and the seventh, Farhan, receiving a four-year term of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 20,000 for weapon possession.

The convicts include notable figures such as slain criminal-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, alongside others identified as Abid, Farhan, Javed, Abdul Kavee, Gul Hasan, Israr, and Ranjit Pal. The incident, which shook the political landscape, occurred on January 25, 2005, when Raju Pal and his companions fell victim to an armed attack near the Dhoomanganj police station in Prayagraj. Raju Pal, along with two associates, Devilal Pal and Sandeep Yadav, lost their lives in the tragic incident, while several others sustained injuries.

Following the attack, Raju Pal’s wife, Pooja, lodged an FIR at the Dhoomanganj police station, implicating Atiq Ahmed, Ashraf Ahmed, and seven others. The subsequent legal proceedings witnessed a complex interplay of political rivalries and legal intricacies.

The case bore significant political ramifications, particularly with the involvement of Atiq Ahmed, who had previously held positions within the Samajwadi Party. Raju Pal’s victory over Atiq Ahmed’s brother in a by-election further heightened tensions, ultimately leading to the fatal assault.

The fallout from Raju Pal’s murder reverberated in the political arena, prompting shifts in party affiliations and electoral strategies. Atiq Ahmed’s expulsion from the Samajwadi Party and the BSP’s refusal to offer him a ticket due to his alleged involvement in the murder further underscored the gravity of the situation.

Tragically, the case witnessed a grim turn when Umesh Pal, the primary witness, was fatally shot in Prayagraj on February 24, 2023. The incident, captured on CCTV, claimed the lives of two policemen assigned to guard Umesh Pal. Prior to his death, Umesh Pal had disclosed instances of intimidation and coercion aimed at silencing him.

Umesh Pal was the brother-in-law of Raju Pal, and a key witness in the murder that took place 18 years ago, on January 25, 2005.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had taken over the probe into the case in 2016. The Special Judge CBI, Lucknow, held Ranjeet Pal, Abid, Farhan Ahmad, Israr Ahmad, Javed, Gulhasan, and Abdul Kavi guilty in the case for criminal conspiracy and murder among other serious charges. Accused Farhan Ahmad was additionally held guilty under the Indian Arms Act.

The conclusion of the trial marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for the victims and their families. The verdict serves as a testament to the resilience of the legal system in addressing complex cases of political violence and underscores the importance of upholding the rule of law.
