Manipur Civil Society declares 48-hour strike over UNLF-P leaders Th Thoiba and L Laimayum Ingba arrest by joint forces

Imphal: In a significant development, civil society organisations (CSOs) across Manipur have announced a 48-hour general strike following the arrest of three members affiliated with the Pambei-led United National Liberation Front (UNLF-P). The arrest has sparked outrage among various CSOs, who have come together to demand the immediate release of the detained individuals.

Addressing the media during a press conference earlier today, Th Manihar, president of the Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) Manipur, expressed strong condemnation of the arrests. Alongside representatives from other organisations, Manihar underscored the need for the unconditional release of the UNLF-P cadres, highlighting their engagement in peace talks with the Government of India. The lack of a positive response to the CSOs’ ultimatum has prompted the initiation of the 48-hour general strike, set to commence from midnight.

The CSOs have claimed that the arrests have reignited concerns over the fragile peace process in Manipur, with CSOs emphasising the importance of upholding agreements and fostering dialogue to address long standing grievances. The Manipur government’s purported lack of awareness about the arrests has drawn criticism from CSOs, who question the sincerity of the government’s commitment to peace negotiations.

As tensions escalate, the 48-hour general strike is expected to have significant implications for daily life in Manipur. However, essential services will be exempted to ensure minimal disruption to vital functions. Notable organisations endorsing the strike include the Manipur Students’ Union, Universal Mothers’ Organisation, Manipuri Women’s Federation, Indigenous People’s Organisation, and more.

The arrests, carried out by a combined forces team under the supervision of the National Investigation Agency, have intensified scrutiny on security measures and the protection of civil liberties in Manipur. Key figures within the UNLF-P, including Th Thoiba and Lieutenant Colonel Laimayum Ingba, were among those apprehended.
