Imphal: In a significant stride towards digital transformation, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh inaugurated a series of groundbreaking initiatives on February 26 at his office complex. Among the notable projects was the digitization and e-archiving of Manipur Gazette, spanning a remarkable 67 years from 1950 to 2017.

Aiming to bring administrative processes into the digital era, the launch included a radio frequency identification-based ID card issuance system, Swagatam, an inventory management system, the induction of e-vehicles in the general administrative department’s fleet, and the introduction of 10 faceless services in the Vahan application of the transport department.

Expressing enthusiasm about the digitization journey, CM Biren Singh took to Facebook, stating, “The Manipur printing and stationery directorate has embarked on a transformative journey of digitising old gazettes, dating back to 1950.”

During the program at his Secretariat, CM Singh emphasised, “The goal of digitization is to preserve analog information and digitise it for computing devices to work seamlessly in the domains.”

The government’s scientific initiatives encompassed Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Employee ID Cards, digitization of the Gazette, and the induction of four electric vehicles in the General Administration Department’s fleet. These measures aim to streamline Secretariat activities through digital identification, appointment scheduling, and electronic mobility.

Speaking as the chief guest at the event, CM Singh highlighted that the launch of the e-Gazette and digitization of the old Gazette will ensure the protection and better storage of crucial documents and information. The project has successfully digitised 31,316 gazettes, comprising 1,16,147 pages, dating back to 1950.

In the backdrop of recent disturbances, it is essential to acknowledge the challenges faced by the Manipur government in safeguarding its crucial data. Just a fortnight ago, a group of miscreants, reportedly backed by Kuki militants, vandalised and set ablaze the DC bungalow and SP office in Churachandpur district. Authorities revealed that the attackers aimed to destroy government data, especially in light of the state government’s announcement to detect and deport illegal intruders using 1961 as the base year. The incident underscores the urgency of protecting official records. However, Chief Minister N Biren Singh reassured the public, stating that the government has successfully digitised numerous datasets essential for the deportation process. This resilience in the face of adversity highlights the significance of the ongoing digital initiatives in securing vital information against unforeseen threats. This forward-thinking approach aligns with the government’s commitment to modernising administrative processes and fostering a more efficient and secure digital ecosystem.
