In a recent turn of events in Manipur, the government has taken decisive action against the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF), following threats made against the Superintendent of Police (SP) and District Collector (DC) of Churachandpur district. Chief Minister N Biren Singh addressed the media, condemning the ITLF’s (Kuki civil society body) actions and assuring that a comprehensive magisterial inquiry will be conducted into the arm-snatching incident at Chingarel in Imphal East district and the violence that unfolded in Churachandpur.

CM Singh highlighted the government’s unwavering commitment to addressing the situation, emphasising that the recent attacks were pre-planned due to the state’s declaration of 1961 as the base year for the deportation of illegal immigrants. The targeted destruction of the DC office in Churachandpur aimed at erasing official data, but the original records are safely stored in Imphal, ensuring the preservation of crucial information.

The unfortunate loss of lives during the Churachandpur arson and the attempted weapon snatching at Manipur Police Training College, Pangei, and 5th IRB, Chingarel, was vehemently condemned by the government. Immediate suspensions were imposed on seven police personnel in connection with the Chingarel incident, and the SP of Churachandpur district took action by suspending one police constable after evidence linking them to militants surfaced.

CM Singh expressed profound sorrow over the casualties and injuries resulting from these incidents, announcing a comprehensive magisterial inquiry into both cases. Beyond the initial suspensions, an FIR will be lodged against an individual deemed responsible for inciting and provoking through social media, potentially linked to the tragic incidents in Churachandpur.

Referring to a tweet from a politician  on the day of the Churachandpur violence, CM Singh hinted at a possible connection between the provocative message and the subsequent arson. The government suspects a pre-planned effort to destroy documents related to the identification of illegal immigrants. Despite these challenges, CM Singh assured the public that the state government possesses all master copies, safeguarding crucial information.

Responding to ITLF’s audacious threats against government officials, CM Singh affirmed the solidarity of the entire state with the SP and DC of Churachandpur. He stressed that protecting the life and property of the state is not just a responsibility but the paramount duty of these officials, highlighting the critical role they play in ensuring the safety and well-being of the citizens.

In a measured media response, CM Singh addressed suspicions regarding a premeditated plan to destroy documents, reinforcing the state government’s readiness with master copies. BJP MLA Paolienlal Haokip raised concerns on social media about the perceived lack of action against those involved in security breaches and questioned the fairness of the state’s response.

The Manipur government remains resolute in its commitment to thoroughly investigating the recent incidents, ensuring justice, and upholding the security and well-being of its citizens. The FIR against ITLF underscores the government’s determination to maintain law and order, sending a clear message that threats against government officials and acts of violence will not be tolerated. As Manipur grapples with these challenges, the government’s proactive measures aim to restore normalcy and reinforce the trust of the people in the state’s ability to uphold justice and security.
