Former telecom minister and central figure in the 2G scam, A Raja, has stirred controversy yet again with remarks regarding freedom fighter VO Chidambaram. Raja, known for his contentious statements and Hindu-centric criticism, faced severe backlash for his recent comments on Chidambaram’s legacy.
In a video clip circulating online, Raja allegedly disparaged Chidambaram, falsely claiming that he had begged for a job for his son from social reformer Periyar. Chidambaram, also known as V.O.C., was a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement and played a pivotal role in the Swadeshi shipping industry.
Raja’s remarks have drawn condemnation, particularly from followers of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), whom Raja criticised in the same video. Raja’s disparaging comments about MGR have further fueled the controversy.
In a public meeting last December, Raja claimed that India’s current support for Israel in the ongoing conflict marks a departure from its historical stand in favour of Palestine. He also asserted that achievements claimed by the Modi government today were actually implemented by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu in the past. Raja specifically mentioned MG Ramachandran (MGR), former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, accusing him of engaging in vote bank politics.
Raja’s divisive remarks continued in September 2022 when he made casteist comments, stating, “You’re a Shudra till you remain a Hindu… Only if we’re vocal about these questions, it will become elemental in breaking Santhana (Sanatana Dharma).” He further compared Sanatana Dharma to diseases like AIDS and leprosy, suggesting it should be eradicated.
The political leader has a history of making controversial statements, advocating for the rejection of Hinduism and the eradication of its influence. He has linked Hinduism to social inequalities, using derogatory language against certain communities.
Raja’s wife’s final rites, performed according to Christian customs, drew attention to his divergent beliefs. His remarks, comparing Hinduism to barbarism, idol worship, and the worship of cows and money, have sparked criticism for their inflammatory nature.
Raja’s remarks linking VOC with EV Ramaswamy Naicker (Periyar) have ignited widespread criticism, particularly from nationalist groups and Hindu organisations.
During his speech, Raja asserted that VOC had “begged” Periyar, drawing a connection between the two historical figures. This baseless assertion has been strongly condemned, with critics accusing Raja of distorting historical facts for political gains. VOC, also known as Kappalotiya Thamizhan, was a prominent freedom fighter and one of the key figures in the Indian independence movement.
Nationalist groups and Hindu Munnani have voiced their displeasure, condemning Raja’s disrespectful remarks about VOC and questioning the lack of response from DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. The video of Raja’s speech has gone viral on social media platforms, prompting widespread outrage.
In response, Hindu Munnani State President Kadeshwara C. Subramaniam issued a press statement admonishing Raja’s lack of historical accuracy and the disrespectful tone adopted towards a revered freedom fighter. The statement highlighted the recent trend of DMK leaders making derogatory comments about various segments of Hindu society.
Raja’s controversial statements also include comparisons between Sanatana Dharma and diseases like AIDS and leprosy. His divisive rhetoric and repeated attacks on Hinduism have drawn criticism, with opponents calling for accountability and responsible communication.
Subramaniam, a leader of the Hindu Munnani, praised Pillai’s contributions to the Swadeshi Movement and his philanthropic endeavours. He condemned Raja’s remarks, emphasising that Pillai’s integrity, simplicity, and sacrifices should not be tarnished. Subramaniam highlighted Pillai’s significant role in the freedom struggle, including his management of a Swadeshi shipping company and his selfless dedication to the nation despite enduring poverty and British oppression.

Hindu Munnani called on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President MK Stalin to take decisive action against Raja and to prevent further derogatory remarks from DMK members.

Joining the chorus of condemnation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also criticised A Raja, cautioning him against making insensitive comments whenever he gets a chance to speak before a microphone.
In Tirupur district, posters have emerged condemning Raja’s remarks and calling for him to mind his words and issue an apology for his comments against V.O.C. Additionally, the Vellalar Progressive Party has demanded an open apology from Raja, urging the DMK to take disciplinary action against him.
Meanwhile, in Kumbakonam, members of the V.O.C. caste organised a protest against Raja’s statements, reflecting the widespread dismay and anger sparked by his remarks.
In a startling revelation, Annamalai, the Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief, has disclosed audio recordings implicating A. Raja, Kanimozhi, and a former police official in alleged evidence tampering and witness fabrication related to the infamous 2G scam case.
The released audio tapes, part of “DMK Files 3,” shed light on purported conversations discussing the manipulation of evidence and the creation of witnesses in the high-profile scandal. Annamalai has promised additional releases, suggesting further damning revelations in the ongoing investigation.
