Veteran RSS Swayamsevak, former senior functionary of Jan Sangh and BJP, Sri Somashekhar Bhat Udupi passes away

In a significant loss to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Jan Sangh, and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Sri Somashekhar Bhat Udupi, a stalwart leader, breathed his last on February 4, 2024 night. His demise marks the end of an era as he played a pivotal role, particularly in Udupi, during the tumultuous period of the Emergency.

Sri Somashekhar Bhat’s contribution to the Sangh Parivar and the BJP was substantial, and his departure has left a void in the political landscape. His leadership during critical times, such as the emergency, showcased his commitment to the cause and earned him respect among colleagues and followers.

One notable moment in Bhat’s recent history was a phone call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 25, 2020. During the 6-minute conversation, PM Modi inquired about Bhat’s health, reflecting the recognition of his service and dedication to the nation. The gesture highlighted the importance of leaders like Sri Somashekhar Bhat in the eyes of the country’s top leadership.

During the conversation, Somashekhar ji  told PM Narendra Modi about the Jan Sangh had come to power in 1968 in Udupi Municipality under the leadership of VS Acharya in 1968. Bhattji was also the former president of the Udupi municiplaity.

Upon hearing about demise of Somashekhar Bhat Udupi, RSS Sarakaryavah Dattatreya Hosabale and other prominent figures expressed deep condolences.
