Imphal: In the wake of escalating violence in Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh engaged in pivotal discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah during their meeting in New Delhi on February 3. The deliberations marked a crucial chapter in addressing the ongoing unrest that has gripped the state, with leaders delving into matters of paramount importance concerning Manipur’s future.

Taking to the microblogging site X, Chief Minister N Biren Singh shared insights into the meeting, stating, “Today, I had the esteemed privilege of meeting with the Hon’ble Union Home Minister, Shri @AmitShah Ji in New Delhi. Engaging in a profound exchange, we discussed matters of paramount importance concerning our state. Rest assured, the Government of India is set to take some important decisions in the interests of the people of Manipur.”

The urgency of these discussions becomes evident as the border town of Moreh remains in a vulnerable state, grappling with persistent attacks by Kuki militants over the past 21 days. On January 17, 2024, heavily armed militants launched further assaults on state police forces, utilising sophisticated weapons, including RPG launchers, bombs, and long-range assault rifles. This resulted in the tragic loss of two police personnel and injuries to seven others in Moreh, Manipur police said.

Despite these challenges, the state police and other security forces are working tirelessly to maintain law and order and bring peace to Moreh. Simultaneously, Manipur faces the grim reality of a teenager’s highly decomposed body being discovered in Chandel district, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing situation. Ng Nevy (17), missing since the ethnic clashes erupted in May 2023, was found in Sokom village. The family had reported Ng Nevy missing on May 31, 2023, initiating a search operation that ultimately led to the discovery of the body.

The violence in Manipur began on May 3, 2023, and has since claimed the lives of over 190 people, with more than 60,000 individuals internally displaced during the eight-month-long ethnic clashes. The recent discussions between Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah indicate a critical juncture in addressing the pressing issues facing Manipur.

These deliberations hold the promise of important decisions by the Government of India to bring stability and security to Manipur. The government’s commitment to addressing the challenges, coupled with the state’s ongoing efforts, signals a collaborative approach towards restoring peace and ensuring the well-being of Manipur’s residents in these trying times.
