The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded an apology from the Congress party for the controversial statement made by DK Suresh, the brother of Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. Suresh, who is also the Congress MP from Bangalore Rural, commented on the interim budget presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, stating that he would demand separate country status for the southern states.
The BJP criticised the statement, calling it divisive and against the spirit of national unity. They urged the Congress party to dissociate itself from such remarks and demanded a public apology. The comment has sparked controversy, with political leaders expressing concerns about statements promoting separatism.
Speaking to the media in New Delhi, Suresh expressed frustration over what he perceives as the Centre’s failure to allocate sufficient funds to South Indian states. He claimed that the money collected from southern states is disproportionately distributed to North Indian states, and if the situation persists, they may be compelled to seek a separate nation.
This provocative statement has drawn strong condemnation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accuses Suresh of making a secessionist call. The BJP is demanding an apology from Congress President Sonia Gandhi and clarification from Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge over the “divisive” remarks.
In response, Parliament witnessed heated debates, especially in the Rajya Sabha, where Treasury benches, led by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Leader of the House Piyush Goyal, sought an apology from the Congress. The BJP ministers labelled Suresh’s comments as “very unfortunate” and claimed they were against the Constitution, sovereignty, and integrity of the country, reflecting divisive thinking within the Congress party.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal stressed the need for an apology from Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, while Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman termed the remarks as a challenge to the sovereignty and integrity of the country. Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagadish Dhankar emphasised the importance of resisting any challenge to sovereignty and integrity, stating that the House represents the mindset of 1.4 billion people.
The controversy underscores the deepening political divisions and raises questions about responsible discourse in public life. The BJP’s insistence on an apology and clarification reflects the seriousness with which they perceive Suresh’s statement, considering it potentially detrimental to the unity of the nation.
Congress, however, swiftly distanced itself from Suresh’s comments. Leader of the Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, emphasised that Congress stands for a united nation and will not tolerate any call for division. He vehemently asserted India’s unity from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, stating that the sacrifices of leaders like Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi were made for the cause of maintaining the country’s unity.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman criticised Congress for not outrightly condemning Suresh’s statement and accused them of creating a diversion. She questioned the prioritisation of technicalities over condemning remarks that potentially divide the country, expressing concern over the unity and sovereignty of India being compromised for political benefits.
Former Law Minister and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad also raised questions about the impact of such statements on the country’s unity and sovereignty, urging a collective commitment to protecting national interests.
In response to the controversy, Kharge highlighted that Suresh had clarified that his statement was misrepresented, suggesting a need to investigate the matter through the privileges committee of the Lok Sabha. However, BJP members continued to press for an apology and referred the matter to the ethics committee of the Lok Sabha.
Amidst the political wrangling, Congress and some opposition members staged a walkout in both houses, condemning the delay in forming the government in Jharkhand after Hemant Soren’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case.
BJP leaders argued that Suresh’s remarks violated his oath of protecting the country’s unity and sovereignty, asserting that he had no right to remain an MP even for a minute. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah defended Suresh, suggesting that his intention was to warn the Centre about the potential demand for a separate nation if perceived injustices towards southern states persisted.
Congress MP DK Suresh has issued a clarification following his controversial remarks about demanding a separate country for southern states. Suresh stated that his comments were intended to emphasize the injustice faced by Karnataka, asserting that his statements have no connection with the Congress party.
Speaking to the media in Bengaluru, Suresh highlighted several grievances faced by Karnataka, including the lack of response to the state’s request for recognition of the Karnataka flag and inadequate funds for the Kannada language, despite its classical language status. He criticised the central government’s handling of the water dispute faced by the state.
Suresh’s clarification comes after his earlier remarks triggered a political storm, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanding an apology and accusing him of making a secessionist call. However, Suresh maintained that he was expressing the sentiments of the people regarding the perceived injustices towards Karnataka.
This incident is part of a broader trend where demands for separate statehood or autonomy for states have been raised by various leaders in different parts of the country. DMK MP A Raja, for instance, has intermittently expressed the demand for state autonomy in public forums. In July 2022, he urged the central government to grant state autonomy and warned against pushing the people of Tamil Nadu towards seeking a separate country.
The historical context of such demands dates back to the mid-20th century when leaders like E.V. Ramaswamy Naicker (Periyar) advocated for a separate Dravida Nadu comprising southern states. However, the demand for a separate Dravida Nadu was dropped in 1962 after secession was deemed illegal by the government.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has also criticised the Union government, accusing it of a vengeful attitude towards the Left government in the state. Vijayan raised concerns about the Centre’s alleged unconstitutional and illegal measures that have adversely affected Kerala financially.
These instances highlight the complex dynamics between states and the Centre, with leaders expressing grievances and frustrations over perceived injustices and insufficient financial support. The political fallout from such statements underscores the deep-rooted tensions between regional aspirations and the federal structure of the Indian political system. As leaders continue to voice their concerns and demands, the debate over state autonomy and fiscal federalism is likely to remain a contentious issue in the Indian political landscape.
