Punjab: The spirit of brotherhood

There is a part of India which has been the center of spiritual, worldly and religious activities since the Vedic period, which was popular by the name Sapta Sindhu. The Vedic land (Sapta Sindhava) is described as the land of seven rivers, which are as follows: Indus, Sutlej, Ravi, Chenav, Vyas(Beas), Jehlum and Saraswati.

It includes the northwestern Indian subcontinent from Gandhara (Afghanistan) to Kurukshetra, which in the present map includes Punjab (India and Pakistan), Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal, Chandigarh etc. Through this path, India spread its Vedic knowledge throughout the world and received the title of Vishwa Guru by showing the right path to the world. Just as a rose flower has thorns along with its fragrance, in the same way foreign invaders arrived on the land of India through this Sapta Sindhu route, which was first repulsed by the Punjab region, seeing the bravery of Punjab region, it also came to be known as the Sword Arm of India.

In history, the respectable foreign invaders, the Mughals, also had to face retaliation from Punjab due to which Babar attacked the social soul (religious system) of Punjab so that the nation could be weakened by social disintegration. In such a dark period of Punjab, the divine light appeared in the form of Shri Guru Nanak Dev, who studied Sanskrit and Persian languages on the land of Punjab and attained Brahmagyan and preached brotherhood to the entire nation. Seeing the destruction of statues, temples and other religious sentiments by mughal emperor Babar, Guru Sahib laid emphasis on Brahma (Akal) worship on the principle of Advaita Vedanta, the main objective of which was to bind the social-spiritual elements together and prevent the society from disintegrating.

Rigveda’s verse Ekam Sad Vipra Bahadhu Vadantyagnim Yamam Matrishvanamahu (R.V.1.164.46) means that the Tatvdarshi sages call that one Supreme God by many names like Indra, Agni, Yama and Matrishva etc. Guru Nanak Dev’s preaching of Brahma Aradhana was successful in creating positive impact in the society and establishing social unity, coordination and brotherhood, due to which Guru Nanak Dev was accepted as a divine messenger in various religions also.

Making the land of Punjab, the mother of India’s Ten Guru tradition, In December 1588, the fifth Patshahi Shri Guru Arjun Dev laid the foundation stone of Shri Harimander Sahib from the Muslim scholar Hazrat Mian Mir, due to which the land of Punjab became an example of national unity and organisation. For this, emphasis was laid on Punjabiyat with the knowledge of unity and brotherhood. Shri Harmandir Sahib emerged as the spiritual center of Punjab, but in order to end the cruelty of the Mlechhas (mughals) increasing in the society, the tenth Patshahi Shri Guru Gobind Singh established the Khalsa Panth and made all the Punjabis warriors and adviced to fight to protect their motherland.

Saptasindhu Punjab, in its ancient history, kept enlightening the entire world with the first Vedic knowledge and in the medieval period, the society moved forward on the path of excellence by acquiring natural and spiritual knowledge from Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Some political and negative mentality attacked Punjab’s social unity by disintegrating it on linguistic basis in 1966, A devotee of Ek Omkar (ੴ), which reinforced the slogan of monotheism in spiritual and religious system and counter the politics of partisanship. All those political parties have made Punjab a puppet of toxic foreign countries, as a result of which Punjab remained surrounded in an atmosphere of hatred for almost three decades, which is written in black letters in the golden history of Punjab.

The land where, the ancient poet Maharishi Valmiki refuted all types of social discrimination and evils by nurturing the children (Luv and Kush) of Ikshvaku descendant Bhagwan Sri Ram, currently on the same land, separatism is being promoted for political allurement. Punjab, the land of Khalsa Raj of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, which was once a symbol of courage, sacrifice, bravery and religion, has now become a symbol of drug addiction, corruption, hooliganism and pollution. Punjab, which used to produce gold in the form of grains from the earth, is today facing water problems.

But these actual issues of Punjab are not being discussed positively and meaningfully by any political parties and social organisation who claimed to be the contractors of society, rather, to gain power, some other issues have been used as the basis to harm the social setup of Punjab as well as the spirit of brotherhood aka Punjabiyat. The main objective of the parties and organisations is to create the fire of hatred among the people of Punjab and bake their political bread from that fire.

Abandoning the teachings of Guru Sahibs about organisation, coordination and brotherhood etc. on the part of the anarchist elements is mutual in causing social damage to Punjab. Punjabi society itself needs to regroup and respond to such toxic elements and work to make Punjab a golden bird again by staying in its motherland, because an organised society is the foundation of an organised and a secure nation
