Renowned educationist and Chancellor of Chandigarh University, Satnam Singh Sandhu, has been nominated for Rajya Sabha membership by President Droupadi Murmu. Emerging from an agricultural background, Sandhu has become a prominent figure in India’s education sector, overcoming significant challenges in his early life.
Starting his journey as the son of a farmer, Sandhu’s determination led him to establish the Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) at Landran in Mohali in 2001. Building upon this foundation, he furthered his vision by founding Chandigarh University in 2012, a prestigious institution that recently gained recognition by securing a place in the QS World Rankings 2023, ranking first among private universities in Asia.
Beyond his contributions to academia, Sandhu has demonstrated a profound commitment to philanthropy, extending financial assistance to numerous students to pursue quality education. Moreover, he has actively engaged in community initiatives aimed at enhancing health, wellness, and fostering communal harmony through his NGOs, the ‘Indian Minorities Foundation’ and New India Development (NID) Foundation.
