.In a momentous decision, the Government of India has posthumously honoured Karpoori Thakur, the stalwart leader and former Chief Minister of Bihar, with the prestigious Bharat Ratna. The announcement comes as a recognition of his remarkable contributions to the realms of social justice and political eminence. The announcement was made on January 23, 2024, marking the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, a day celebrated as Parakram Diwas

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a statement, highlighted Thakur’s dedication to the principles of democracy and social justice. “Karpuri Thakur’s life was dedicated to serving the people, especially the marginalised. His contributions have left an indelible mark on our political ethos,” remarked the Prime Minister.

Karpoori Thakur, born on January 24, 1927, in Samastipur, Bihar, was a towering figure in Indian politics, especially known for his relentless advocacy for the marginalised sections of society. His political journey started with his involvement in the Quit India Movement during the independence struggle, and he continued to champion the cause of the downtrodden throughout his career.

Thakur’s foray into mainstream politics gained momentum when he joined the Janata Party and later became the Chief Minister of Bihar, serving two non-consecutive terms from 1977 to 1979 and then from 1980 to 1985. His tenure marked a period of significant social reforms and inclusive policies, earning him acclaim for his efforts in upliftment and empowerment.

One of his major accomplishments was the implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations, which aimed at providing reservation to Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in government jobs and educational institutions. Thakur’s commitment to social justice resonated strongly during this period, earning him admiration and criticism alike.

The announcement of the Bharat Ratna for Karpoori Thakur has elicited widespread appreciation from political leaders, social activists, and the general public. Many acknowledge the late leader’s role in shaping Bihar’s political landscape and his enduring impact on national policies that address inequality and discrimination.

The Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, is a fitting tribute to a leader whose legacy continues to influence the socio-political narrative. The posthumous conferment underscores the recognition of Karpuri Thakur’s lasting impact and the enduring relevance of his ideals in the current context.

Karpoori Thakur’s family expressed gratitude for the honour bestowed upon him, acknowledging the significance of the Bharat Ratna in commemorating his tireless efforts for the welfare of the underprivileged.

The award ceremony, scheduled for the Republic Day celebrations on January 26, is expected to be a poignant moment as the nation pays tribute to a visionary leader whose contributions have shaped the course of social and political discourse in India. The Bharat Ratna for Karpoori Thakur not only celebrates his individual achievements but also stands as a symbol of acknowledgment for the struggles and aspirations of the countless people he represented and championed throughout his illustrious career.
