In a shocking incident that unfolded at Gurudwara Shri Choura Khooh Sahib in Phagwara, Punjab, this morning, a Nihang Sikh, identified as Ramandeep Singh Mangu Math, allegedly murdered a youth on suspicion of sacrilege.

The accused, prior to the gruesome act, posted a video on social media in which the victim was seen acknowledging being sent to desecrate the Gurudwara. However, the victim vehemently denied committing sacrilege, asserting his honesty and hardworking nature.

Following the heinous crime, Ramandeep Singh locked himself inside the Chaura Khooh Gurudwara. Upon receiving information about the incident, senior police officers rushed to the scene. The victim’s identity remains unknown, and the accused is yet to be apprehended. The police recovered the victim’s body from the premises of the Gurudwara.

“I did not commit sacrilege; I am an honest and hardworking man.” Yet Nihang Sikh klled this man after recording the video.

Sacrilege, the act of breaching or disrespecting something considered sacred or holy, including religious sites, artifacts, or symbols, has been a contentious issue in Punjab. The state has witnessed several instances of violence and sacrilege in recent years.

Last year, protests erupted after an individual allegedly attacked two Sikh priests (‘granthis’) and desecrated the ‘Guru Granth Sahib’ at a Gurudwara in Morinda. The accused, Jasvir Singh, was arrested by the Punjab Police after being overpowered and beaten by worshippers.

In another incident reported in November 2023, a clash between Nihang Sikhs and the police in Kapurthala’s Sultanpur Lodhi resulted in the death of a Punjab home guards constable, identified as Jaspal Singh. The clash ensued over control of the Gurudwara Akal Bunga, situated opposite the main Gurudwara Ber Sahib. The heavily armed Nihangs had barricaded themselves inside, leading to a confrontation with the police. Despite attempts at negotiation, the situation escalated, resulting in the tragic death of Constable Jaspal Singh.

As the investigation into the recent Gurudwara Shri Choura Khooh Sahib incident unfolds, tensions over sacrilege and religious disputes continue to pose challenges for authorities in Punjab.
