Andhra Pradesh: Coastal region witnesses heavy rains due to cyclone ‘Michaung’

A cyclonic storm named "MICHAUNG" (pronounced as MIGJAUM) is currently looming over the central Bay of Bengal, intensifying rapidly and posing a potential threat to the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. As of the latest update on December 4, the storm is expected to further escalate into a severe cyclonic storm, with significant implications for the affected regions

According to India Meteorological Department(IMD), as of 0530 hours IST on December 4, 2023, Cyclonic Storm “MICHAUNG” is centered over the West central & adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal, approximately 110 km east-northeast of Chennai. The storm is moving northwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph. Forecasters predict that it will continue to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by the forenoon of December 4, then move nearly northwards, running parallel and close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast. The system is anticipated to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam, close to Bapatla during the forenoon of December 5.

In view of this, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stern warning for several districts in Andhra Pradesh, urging heightened vigilance in the face of anticipated adverse weather conditions. Residents of Nellore, Prakasam, Tirupati, Chittoor, Krishna, Bapatla, Guntur, Anantapur, Kadapa, NTR, and Palnadu districts are advised to stay on high alert as the IMD predicts the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rains on Monday and Tuesday. The alert has been categorised as a “red alert,” signifying the potential for severe weather conditions.

All the coastal districts of the Andhra Pradesh state are currently bearing the brunt of a cyclone, with heavy rain and powerful winds wreaking havoc since the early hours. The adverse weather conditions have led to significant challenges, particularly for the farmers, resulting in extensive damage to harvested fields and substantial losses for farmers. As the region grapples with the aftermath, relief efforts are underway, with NDRF teams mobilised to assist in storm relief operations along the coastal zones. At Manginapudi beach, near Machilipatnam, the sea has surged to alarming levels, reaching a height of 10 meters. This surge has sparked concerns among local fishermen, who are now grappling with the unpredictable and treacherous conditions. The rising sea levels not only pose a threat to the livelihoods of fishermen but also underscore the urgent need for coordinated efforts to ensure the safety of coastal communities.

Cyclone Michoung has unleashed its fury upon the Nellore and Tirupati districts, leaving a path of devastation in its wake. The cyclone’s impact has been particularly severe in Nellore, where low-lying areas are submerged, homes are inundated, and critical infrastructure is facing significant damage and disruptions.

The sea conditions are anticipated to be rough to very rough on December 4, very rough to high on 5th, and very rough to rough on December 6.

In view of the cyclone alert, South Central Railway division that serves Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and to a limited extent, Karnataka, Tamilnadu & Madhya Pradesh states, has cancelled its train services or diverted to alternate routes.
