Rajasthan seems to have followed the three-decade-old trend of rotating governments, and the Congress government led by Ashok Gehlot is on its way out. Some of the key outcomes of the recently concluded Rajasthan Assembly Elections 2023 are:
BJP’s Decisive Victory
The BJP has established dominance in Rajasthan, securing a sweeping triumph in all three states of the Hindi Heartland that were up for grabs in the Assembly elections. The outcome surpassed expectations, positioning the BJP for a decisive victory and reshaping the political landscape in the state.
Anti-Incumbency Trends
The Congress camp faced disappointment, with evident anti-incumbency sentiments against the Gehlot government reflecting in the results. The ruling party found itself below the 70-seat threshold, underscoring the tradition of voting out the incumbent in Rajasthan.
Flip-Flop Continues
Rajasthan continues its tradition of voting out the incumbent, with Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot becoming the victim of this trend for the third time in his career. The BJP is set to make a comfortable comeback, leading in over 115 seats, while the Congress struggles to reach the 70-seat mark.
Not Much Gap in the Vote Share As Compared to Seat Share
Despite a substantial gap in the number of seats secured by the BJP and Congress, the difference in the number of votes garnered by the two parties is not significant. As of the votes counted until around 4 pm, the BJP has secured close to 42% of the votes, with the Congress’s vote share not far behind at 39.5%.
BJP Goes Without CM Face
In an interesting strategic move, the BJP decided not to project a Chief Ministerial face in the absence of former CM Vasundhara Raje, who fell out of favor with the party’s high command. The state, where the Congress boasts two highly popular leaders in Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot, witnessed the BJP’s organizational efficiency and anti-corruption plank leading to a successful comeback.
According to poll analyst Narayan Bareth, the BJP’s efficient organisation and its focus on countering corruption among incumbent MLAs played a pivotal role in the party’s resurgence.
Success of Gehlot and Pilot
Despite the overall disappointing results for the Congress, incumbent CM Ashok Gehlot and his former deputy Sachin Pilot are both on their way to securing victory in their respective constituencies by considerable margins. Gehlot secured victory by over 26,000 votes from Sardarpura, while Pilot achieved a win with a margin of close to 30,000 votes.
On the flip side, House Speaker C P Joshi faced defeat in the Nathdwara constituency, losing to BJP’s Vishvaraj Singh Mewar by 7,500 votes.
Royals Continue To Emerge Victorious With Huge Margin
Former CM Vasundhara Raje showcased her enduring popularity in her bastion of Jhalrapatan, winning her seat by a margin of over 50,000 votes. This victory positions her strongly for a potential return as the chief minister of the desert state.
Another royal and rumoured CM candidate, Diya Kumari, swept the Vidhyadhar Nagar seat by an impressive margin of over 71,000 votes. The princess from the Jaipur royal family secured over 60 per cent of the total votes polled in her constituency, further solidifying the influence of the royals in Rajasthan politics.
As the BJP celebrates its triumph and prepares to assume power with a clear mandate, the political landscape in Rajasthan undergoes a significant transformation, setting the stage for the party’s governance in the desert state.
