At 53 years old, Katipally Venkata Ramana Reddy, a professional businessman and a Class 12 pass-out, defied expectations by securing a substantial lead in the recently concluded Telangana Assembly Elections 2023 and is on the verge of being declared a winner. Currently leading with 50,294 votes, he has outperformed KCR, who has garnered 46,780 votes, and Revanth Reddy, trailing with 45,419 votes.

According to the election affidavit, Katipally Venkata Ramana Reddy has declared total assets amounting to Rs 49.7 crore, comprising Rs 2.2 crore in moveable assets and Rs 47.5 crore in immovable assets. His total declared income stands at Rs 9.8 lakh, with Rs 4.9 lakh being self-income. However, he also carries liabilities amounting to Rs 58.3 lakh, and there are 11 criminal cases registered against him.

In the previous 2018 assembly elections, Gampa Govardhan from Telangana Rashtra Samithi (now BRS) held the MLA position in Kamareddy, securing 42 per cent of the total votes. He won against Congress’ Mohammad Ali Shabbir by a margin of 2 per cent.

Assembly constituency no.16 Kamareddy, located in the North Telangana region and Kamareddy district, falls under the 5. Zahirabad (General) Lok Sabha constituency. With a demographic composition of 14.73 per cent Scheduled Caste and 4.67 per cent Scheduled Tribe populations, Kamareddy reflects a rural constituency with an estimated literacy level of 48.49 per cent, according to the Census of India, 2011.

In the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections, Kamareddy had a total of 2,45,822 eligible electors, comprising 1,18,718 males, 1,27,080 females, and 24 registered voters identifying as the third gender.

Katipally Venkata Ramana Reddy’s triumph in Kamareddy marks a significant upset, illustrating the unpredictable dynamics of electoral outcomes. His unexpected victory against prominent political figures adds a new chapter to Telangana’s political narrative and underscores the unpredictable nature of Indian elections.
