Manipur: Farmers find solace in midst of violence as security forces aid paddy harvest in violence-hit State

Amid the continuous violence for more than six months, the farmers of trouble-hit Manipur started harvesting their paddy with the help of security forces. A video of CRPF jawans helping farmers in Tairenpokpi, Lamsang Subdivision, and Imphal West District reap the harvest with a helping hand went viral in the rift-stricken State

Farmers expressed happiness for the friendly behaviour of the security forces and their help during the agriculture season for the last 4-5 months. Earlier on July 3, the Manipur Government had decided to provide security to the farmers at the paddy field.

The first meeting of the unified command, chaired by the Chief Minister of Manipur on July 3, decided to provide security to the farmers who will start the cropping season. At the Unified Command meeting, it was decided that an additional 2000 Manipur police personnel and central security forces would guard the farmers who will go to the paddy field in the cropping season. Athoibi, a farmer of the village, said that these jawans from CRPF also belong to farmers’ families, and they were very happy to help us reap our paddy in these difficult days.

It should be mentioned that over 2000 Manipur police and central security forces personnel were guarding farmers in the paddy fields during the agri-season to complete their agricultural works. Meanwhile, the Government of Manipur has extended the suspension of mobile internet and data services, as well as internet and data services through VPN, in the State.

The decision, which was announced through an official order, comes as a response to the recent surge in violence in certain parts of the State. Manipur Home Department cited concerns about the potential misuse of social media platforms to propagate images, hate speech, and videos that could incite public passions, further destabilising the law-and-order situation in the State. It should be mentioned that the situation in the troubled State deteriorated after Kuki militants ambushed Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Moreh Chingtham Anand on October 31.

Special operations are on in the Indo-Myanmar border by Assam Rifles and Manipur police commando teams to nab the culprit. Security forces arrested seven persons, including one Myanmar national from Chavangphai, Yangoubung, Seijang, Zion Veng, under Moreh police station in Tengnoupal district and recovered ten grams of Gunpowder, one Chinese Hand Grenade, sixty grams of suspected Sulphur Dioxide, one hundred and two numbers of 12 Bore rounds and 2.5 Kg of suspected explosive material (Ammonium Nitrate).

Security forces conducted search operations in the fringe and vulnerable areas of the Kakching and Thoubal districts. On November 5, Security forces removed one unauthorised bunker at Santipur Area, Bishnupur district. A total of 133 Nakas/Checkpoints were installed in different districts of Manipur, both in the hill and the valley. Police detained 2260 persons in connection with violations in different districts of the State.
