Tamil Nadu: Archbishop of Anglican Church apologises for controversial prayer incident in Chennimalai

In a surprising turn of events, Archbishop Gunasekaran Samuel of the Anglican Church of South India and North India Missionary Diocese has issued a heartfelt apology for a controversial incident in Chennimalai, Tamil Nadu, where a group of Christians prayed on a hill in what was perceived as an attempt to rename the site "Jesus Hill" or "Kalwari Hill."

The incident had stirred tensions and garnered significant public attention, with Hindus across the region expressing their displeasure at what they saw as a provocative act. Last Saturday, Chennimalai witnessed a massive turnout of Hindus who gathered to condemn the actions of a group known as Christian Munnani, protesting the potential renaming of Chennimalai as “Jesus Hill” or “Kalwari Hill.” The protestors waved saffron flags, displaying their sentiments and unity against the perceived provocations.

This gathering underscores the strong sentiments within the Hindu community and their firm stance against what they view as attempts to alter the religious and cultural identity of the region. The incident raised concerns about communal harmony and the need for respect and tolerance between religious communities.

Contrast with Previous Incidents

The incident in Chennimalai has drawn attention to a perceived contrast in reactions to different religious expressions. Notably, while the chanting of “Jai Sri Ram” at a cricket event was labeled as “unacceptable” by some, there was a different approach to public expressions of religious identity. Tamil Nadu’s sports minister, Udayanidi Stalin, faced criticism for his interpretation that “Jai Shri Ram” was communal while “Allahu Akbar” was secular. This controversy highlighted the complexity of handling religious expressions and cultural diversity in India.

Unexpected Apology from Archbishop Gunasekaran Samuel

Amidst these tensions, Archbishop Gunasekaran Samuel has extended an unexpected olive branch. In a video that circulated widely on social media, he apologized on behalf of the Christian community, particularly the Christian Munnani group, for their actions on Chennimalai Hill.

In the video, Archbishop Samuel expressed his sorrow and acknowledged the inappropriateness of Christians praying at the site. He stated, “Regarding the issue of Chennimalai, I have been watching all the channels. This has caused me a lot of sadness. Especially, dear Christian friends, it was a very wrong thing to go to Chennimalai and pray. They should not have done that. That is the truth. It was a very wrong thing for Christian friends to go to Chennimalai and pray.”

The Archbishop went further to condemn these actions and called for governmental intervention, saying, “So, this government must take action against such people. This Tamil Nadu government must take action against such people. If the Tamil Nadu government does not take action, it only means that they are hand in glove with them.”

He emphasized that the controversial actions did not align with Christian teachings, adding, “It is not mentioned in the Bible that you have to go to the place where others are praying and pray to Jesus. I believe that this was done wantonly.”

The Archbishop acknowledged the potential for damage to the reputation of the Christian community, saying, “There is no doubt that the entire Christian community will get the wrong name because of such a thing. So, please understand this. Especially, they say that they are Christian Munnani. That Christian Munnani is a new thing, even our Christians do not know about it. We do not know what it is.”

An Appeal for Communal Harmony

Amidst concerns about the incident fueling communal unrest, Archbishop Samuel extended an apology to the Hindu community, stating, “So, I would like to apologize to all my dear brothers and sisters who belong to the Hindu religion. I apologize on behalf of the Christians for this incident that took place using the name of Christians. Please forgive me. We do not need any hatred among us.”

He reiterated the need for harmony and understanding among different religious communities, saying, “We would like to accept you as our brothers and sisters. We were all born on the same soil. So let there be no differences between us. I ask again for forgiveness.”

It’s worth noting that Archbishop Gunasekaran Samuel has been a supporter of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has praised its efforts in treating all religions equally. He had previously expressed his belief that minorities were safe and were receiving more benefits under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Promoting Communal Harmony Amidst Controversy

Archbishop Samuel’s apology and his call for communal harmony come at a crucial juncture, as the incident in Chennimalai had the potential to exacerbate religious tensions. His actions reflect a commitment to peaceful coexistence and underline the importance of mutual respect and understanding among different religious communities in India.

The incident in Chennimalai and the subsequent response from Archbishop Gunasekaran Samuel highlight the challenges and sensitivities associated with religious expression and identity in India, and the need for continued efforts to promote tolerance, respect, and unity among its diverse population.

As India grapples with such complex issues, leaders like Archbishop Samuel play a pivotal role in bridging divides and fostering an environment where people of all faiths can coexist peacefully. In a world marked by diversity, it is the commitment to dialogue and understanding that paves the way for a harmonious society.
