On September 26, 2023, the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) expressed serious concerns over the allegations of Canadian PM Justin Trudeau in the parliament of Canada of the involvement of officials of the Indian agencies in the murder of the Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar who was also a resident of the country.

In a special resolution passed by the SGPC executive meeting, which included the President of the Organisation, Harjinder Singh Dhami, it has been said that the statements made in the parliament of any country are not understood as common but rather considered fact-based within the scope of the dignity of the concerned country’s constitution. Everything the PM says in the parliament cannot be rejected easily

The truth of the allegations made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau against the Indian agencies should be brought to light by the people through a sincere effort by both countries to go beyond politics. If this case is suppressed only because of politics, then it will be considered an injustice to human rights.

The SGPC Resolution

The resolution further strongly condemned the hate propaganda being spread against the Sikhs and Punjab this entire phenomenon on the mainstream media and social media platforms openly. It is said that the India-Canada issue has been deliberately focused by a large part of the media only on the character assassination of Sikhs.

Through the resolution, the SGPC executive committee demanded that the government of India take this issue seriously and take action against those who tarnish the image of Sikhs. It was clarified that the Sikhs Community respects all religions and does not hold grudges or enmity against anyone. Some people are using the current situation as a weapon to create divisions among communities, which must be stopped immediately.

The SGPC executive asked the Government of India to look into this matter. It was said that action should be taken against forces which are tarnishing the image of Sikhs. Appropriate steps must be taken by the government to end the growing mistrust among Sikhs.

Other Decisions (SGPC)

Apart from the special resolution, the SGPC executive committee took over many other decisions and also discussed the matters of different departments. In the resolution, the decision was taken to especially honour the lawyers who pursued the case of the Sikhs who were lodged in Jodhpur Jail as well as those who assisted them following the June 1984 military attack on Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

Another decision was made to honour the young Sikh Sidakdeep Singh, a resident of Noida, who has created a world record for having the longest kesh (unshorn hair) as a male teenager.

People Involved

In addition to the President of the SGPC, senior Vice President of the organisation Baldev Singh Qaimpur, junior vice president Avtar Singh Raya, general secretary Bhai Gurbachan Singh Grewal, executive members Mohan Singh Bangi, Jarnail Singh Kartarpur, Surjit Singh Tughalwal, Bawa Singh Gumanpura, Bibi Gurinder Kaur Bholuwala, Baba Gurpreet Singh Randhawa, Malkit Singh Changal, SGPC secretary Partap Singh, OSD Satbir Singh Dhami.
