In a momentous declaration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed a significant nomenclature shift for the Moon’s historical site where Chandrayaan-3’s lander Vikram gently made contact. Addressing the scientists at ISRO in Bengaluru, PM Modi announced the new name for the touchdown point of Vikram Lander as ‘Shiv Shakti Point’. This revelation unfolded at the ISRO Telemetry Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC), marking PM Modi’s visit to honour the ingenious minds behind the Chandrayaan-3 mission.
Reflecting on this convention of christening lunar touchdown sites, PM Modi articulated, “India has now chosen to designate the precise spot where Vikram, the lander, achieved its lunar rendezvous. This juncture shall forever be referred to as ‘Shiv Shakti Point’.” Elaborating on the etymology of the name, he conveyed, “The term ‘Shakti’ in ‘Shiv Shakti’ is emblematic of the diligent labour, inspiration, and empowerment symbolised by our women scientists.”
In an additional proclamation, the Moon’s terrain where the Chandrayaan-2’s Vikram lander met an unfortunate fate in 2019 has been bestowed the name ‘Tiranga Point’. Elucidating the decision-making process, PM Modi stated, “At the time of Chandrayaan-2’s mission, India opted not to christen the site of Vikram’s crash landing, as it seemed premature. Yet, with the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3, the occasion merits attributing a name to the landmark where Chandrayaan-2 indelibly marked its presence. With our ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ movement resonating and our national flag etched on the Moon, it is only befitting to label this site as ‘Tiranga Point’—a commemoration of India’s inaugural connection with the lunar surface.”
PM Modi proceeded to unveil a third revelation, declaring August 23 as National Space Day, coinciding with the day Chandrayaan-3’s landing transpired. This dedicated day is envisioned as a celebration of scientific achievement and technological progress, designed to ignite inspiration across generations.
Upon his arrival at ISTRAC, the Prime Minister was warmly welcomed by ISRO chief S Somanath and a constellation of scientists. Addressing this assembly of visionary minds, he expressed, “What you all have accomplished stands as a beacon of inspiration in this era. With this milestone, the global community has come to acknowledge India’s prowess in the realm of science and technology.”
Recently, India’s Chandrayaan-3 lander Vikram accomplished a graceful touch down on the lunar surface. Accompanied by six scientific payloads, the lander carries the Pragyan rover, poised to meticulously collect data over a 14-day span, unravelling mysteries on our nearest celestial companion.
