The  Border Security Force (BSF) caught a smuggler for carrying 10 gold biscuits, weighing 11644.75 grams, from Bangladesh to India, officials said on August 25.

The estimated value of seized gold biscuits was around Rs 69 lakh. The smugglers were trying to cross with the gold biscuits from Bangladesh to the Indian border, they said.

According to officials, the Intelligence Branch of BSF, on August 24, informed the Company Commander of Border Outpost Baijnathpur that some smugglers could carry out gold smuggling from the area of Border Outpost Baijnathpur.

As soon as the information was received, the Company Commander immediately alerted the troops and formed a Quick Reaction Team (QRT).

At about 11:40 hrs, the jawan on camp duty sensed some suspicious movement in his area of responsibility. The jawan saw some goods being thrown over the Border fence by the smugglers from the Bangladesh side. Seeing this, the jawan immediately ran towards the spot and challenged the smugglers. Seeing the jawan coming towards them, the smugglers ran towards Bangladesh. At the same time, a smuggler came from India to pick up the said goods. The jawan caught the smuggler on the spot.

At the same time, the Company Commander, along with the Quick Reaction Team, also reached the spot. On intensive search of the spot, two packets were recovered from the spot, on opening which 10 gold biscuits were recovered.

The apprehended smuggler has been identified as Rayel Mandal (25 years), district Nadia. The apprehended smuggler was brought to the border post for further questioning.

The apprehended smuggler, along with the seized gold biscuits, have been handed over to Custom Office Karimpur for further legal action.
