India’s Jeswin Aldrin on Wednesday qualified for the men’s long jump final at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest, Hungary.
The 21-year-old Aldrin, who holds India’s national record of 8.42m, logged 8.00m in his first attempt at the National Athletics Centre. He fouled on his next two attempts but sneaked into the final after finishing 12th in the field of 39.
Notably, only the top 12 advanced to the men’s long jump final, which is scheduled on Thursday.
Wayne Pinnock of Jamaica topped the qualifying round with a new world-leading effort of 8.54m.
However, Murali Sreeshankar, who is ranked sixth in the world, failed to produce his par and crashed out after his best effort of 7.74m, which placed him 22nd during the qualifying round.
Sreeshankar’s second attempt measured 7.66m while his final attempt was 6.70m. His personal best is 8.41m set at Bhubaneswar in June. The 24-year-old Indian also registered 8.09m to finish third at the Paris Diamond League earlier this year.
In the women’s javelin throw, Annu Rani logged a distance of 57.05m and finished 19th in the field of 36. Annu holds India’s national record of 63.82m set last year but is yet to cross the 60m mark this year.
While Australia’s Kelsey-Lee Barber was the last qualifier for the final with a distance of 59.66m, the field was topped by Latvia’s Lina Muze-Sirma with an effort of 63.50m.
