Why does the mere mention of ‘Hindu Rashtra’ scare a few communities particularly the Muslims? Far from being scary, Hindutva, Hindu or Sanatana is a wide spectrum belief system that preaches love, peace, harmony and welfare of all living beings on this planet and even beyond. The idea of ‘Secularism’ actually springs from the soul of Hindutva as is manifested in the Vedic doctrines like ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (World is a family!) and ‘Sarve bhavantu sukhinah’ (Let there be happiness for all!) Historically, the Sanatana dharma has neither preached nor ever pursued the policy of ‘conversion’ even though those who wish to embrace this faith of their own volition are always welcome. Therefore, the concept of ‘Hindu Rashtra’ is rooted in a truly secular ideology of inclusive society. It inspires harmonious and holistic development in India conjoining diverse ideas, and socio-religious practices, promoting a pluralistic society, fostering harmony, trust and fraternity among all segments of the society and individuals without discrimination.
Far from being a dogmatic religious idea, the term ‘Hindu Rashtra’ encapsulates the cultural, historical and philosophical heritage of India as a civilization. It is a celebration of the rich tapestry of Indian traditions, comprising linguistic, multiple religious, cultural and ethnic identities that should thrive together in harmony. The concept envisions a society that respects and acknowledges all faiths, fostering an environment where people can engage in harmonious development and their chosen pursuits and ambitions for advancement and fulfilment – individually and collectively. Thus fraternal disposition towards others is yet another essence of Hindu Rashtra, an idea that sprouts from yet another principle of the Vedic Philosophy – ‘Atmavat sarvabhutani veekshantey dharmabuddhyah’ (Those who are blessed with pious intellect, look at all other beings as a manifestation of their own self!). This dictum seeks to wipe out all discrimination and prejudice and fosters fraternity among all citizens.
The very idea of all-round development would remain incomplete unless it is packed with universal support, inclusive participation and common public welfare extending to all sections of society especially those in the lowest strata. Ethics flowing from Hindutva comprise compassion, brotherhood, humane concerns, social sensitivity, faith in value systems, respect and tolerance for another faith or belief system. It is because of this open-minded readiness to imbibe and adapt to new ideas. It has also helped us to absorb newer customs, languages, social adaptations and yet not disconnect from our root culture of Vishwa Shanti evam bratribhaav (Global peace and fraternity).
Much damage has been already done by the so-called ‘secularist’ parties who find it self-rewarding to push their policy of ‘Divide and Rule’ through appeasement of a particular section of society rather than any concrete programme for poverty eradication and empowerment of the poor and Muslim women. Thankfully, the Modi government has launched some laudable plans aimed at poverty alleviation and empowerment like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Kisan Samman Nidhi, Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthan Mahaabhiyan, Fasal Bima, PM Shram Yogi Mandhan, Smagra Shiksha, PM Jan Vikas Karyakram, PM Ujjwala Yojana and many other programmes have already achieved commendable results. The full value of benefits of these schemes is being reaped by the deserving households irrespective of caste or community throughout the country. Even more commendably, the benefits of all these schemes are reaching every deserving family across the country digitally. Such are the virtues of the ‘Hindu Rashtra’ principle of ‘Sab ka Sath, Sab ka Vikas’ which does not distinguish between castes or religions.
The philosophy of harmonious and holistic development flows directly from the concept of ‘Hindu Rashtra’ which centres around the principles of dharma (righteousness), ahimsa (non-violence, peace, prosperity and genuine happiness for all as reiterated in our Vedas and Upanishads. The fundamental principle of harmonious co-existence, tolerance, generosity and benevolence is found expressed in many verses like this one from Kathopanishad:-
ओ३म् सर्वेषां स्वस्तिर्भवतु, सर्वेषां शान्तिर्भवतु ।
सर्वेषां पूर्णंभवतु, सर्वेषां मङ्गलंभवतु ||
Translation: May there be Wellness for all; May there be Peace for all; May there be Fulfilment for all; May there be Blissfulness for all.
As can be seen from numerous such edicts found in the Hindu philosophy, the thrust is not merely on human well-being but on all living beings including plants! That shows our concern for ecological harmony and security as well. Such high values underscore the significance of compassion, empathy, fraternity and the desirability of an integrated interdependent society following their common as well as diverse belief systems in harmony with all others.
Moreover, ‘Hindu Rashtra’ inspires everyone to lend support for the holistic development of India, recognising the importance of inter-dependence of all segments of society, states and regions. It includes social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects keeping the emphasis on eradication of poverty, inequality and social disparities ensuring that the fruit of progress reaches all sections of society. The philosophy provides a balanced and inclusive growth model that empowers marginalised communities, creating a more equitable, just and harmonious society.
It is unfortunate that the term ‘Hindu’ and ‘Hindutva’ have been much maligned by the vested political and communal elements who pry on and garner votes by pursuing the divisive policy of appeasement and inciting inter-caste, communal conflicts. The secular thread of ‘Hindu Rashtra’, runs all through its applications keeping religion and state separate. It recognises the importance of a pluralistic society where all religions are treated with equal respect and given the freedom to practice their beliefs without discrimination. At the same time, the State would not relinquish its role in safeguarding the rights of minorities and promoting inter-faith dialogue to foster harmonious relations and understanding among different religious communities.
The philosophy of Hindu Rashtra also emphasises the spread of education and cultural exchange. An education system that nurtures analytical quest, critical thinking, creativity, a mindset for research, appreciation of diverse knowledge systems, and modern technology. Cultural exchange programmes facilitate cross-cultural examination and understanding breaking down barriers and promoting trust, unity, narrowing and bridging the inter-community cleavages of fear, suspicion and conflict.
To conclude, the idea of ‘Hindu Rashtra’ is rooted in genuine secularism. It is a regime with a vision for inclusive and holistic development and empowerment of all classes and communities of India. It celebrates the cultural heritage of India, promotes religious harmony, and advocates for social justice and shared progress. Its essence lies in its ability to embrace newer discoveries, and harmless diversities while fostering a sense of unity and collective advancement leading to a harmonious, prosperous and powerful India to play its bigger role in promoting global harmony, peace, cooperation and development.
