Imphal: Fresh violence has erupted in Manipur in the early morning of August 5. According to reports, three villagers in Bishnupur district were hacked to death in the wee hours of August 5.

The incident took place in Kwakta village in Bishnupur district. The villagers were hacked to death by armed miscreants in their sleep.

Reports suggest that suspected Kuki militants killed the three villagers in the Kwakta area in the wee hours of 5th August.

The deceased villagers were reportedly from the Meitei community. The deceased has been identified as Yumnam Jiten Meitei (46), Yumnam Pishak Meitei (67) and Yumnam Premkumar Meitei (39) all hailing from Kwakta Lamkhai. The suspected Kuki militant attacked Kwakta villages in the wee hours of this morning and started indiscriminate firing.

The villagers who were in their sleep were killed in the attack. Later the militants set ablaze several houses in the village, police said.

Police sources said that the militants crossed the buffer zone set up by security forces and fired in the village. The buffer zone was just 2 kilometres ahead of the village where the firing incident took place in Bishnupur district.

Meanwhile the State Cabinet has recommended to the Governor of Manipur for summoning the 4th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on 21st August 2023,” a statement issued by the Manipur government said.

Many civil society organisations of the state have been demanding a special session of the assembly to discuss the ongoing crisis in the state.

The clashes first erupted in Manipur on May 3 during a protest by tribal students union against a high court order proposing scheduled tribe (ST) status to the Meitei community. At least 150 people have lost their lives in the violence so far and over 60000 people were internally displaced in the Northeastern state.
