Semicon India 2023: PM Modi says, “World needs a trusted, reliable chief supplier of semiconductors and India is one”

India’s semiconductor industry is making its mark internationally with the US and Japan having already inked MoUs with India. Other big names of the semiconductor industry have expressed willingness to invest in this sector in India.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 28 inaugurated the ‘Semicon India 2023’ in Gandhinagar. While addressing the gathering at the event, PM Modi said that India never disappoints anyone and added, “”A few years earlier, India was a small player in the sector. Now, our share in the global electronics sector has increased a lot. In 2014, India’s electronics production was less than $30 billion. Now, it has crossed $100 billion. The country which was first an importer of mobile phones is now making the best phones in the world and exporting them.”

Highlighting the surge in the number of internet and broadband users PM Modi said, in 2014, there were 25 crore internet connections, now there are more than 85 million internet users. These numbers indicate the growth of the country.

During the recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden had stated that they would be setting up a state-of-the-art semiconductor assembly, testing, marking and packaging (ATMP) facility by Micron Technology Inc in India.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the boost which India’s semiconductor industry got during the recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated, “During the PM’s state visit to the US, three major semiconductor agreements were signed, the first one is micron technology… second applied materials, the most complex equipment which goes into semiconductor manufacturing will be manufactured in India…third Lam Research, it’ll train 60,000 engineers on their semiverse platform.”

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel stated that it was a proud moment for India that the country has finally taken a big leap in the semiconductor sector.

Ajit Manocha, President and CEO, SEMI at Semicond India said that India is now all set to make its  global presence felt in the semiconductor industry. He stated, “…I have been asked whether India is ready to be part of the global semiconductor industry…Today I can say the journey has begun. For the first time in India’s history, geopolitics, domestic policies and private sector capacity are aligned in India’s favour to become a player in semiconductor production…the current semiconductor industry is likely to grow to a $ 1 trillion industry in the next 6-7 years…Now it is India’s turn…India would be the next powerhouse in semiconductors in Asia…”

Mark Papermaster, EVP and CTO, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) at Semiconductor India said, “…AMD will invest $400 million in India in the next five years. AMD will enhance its R&D capabilities…We will build our largest design centre in Bengaluru…”

Young Liu, Chairman, Foxconn at Semicon India stated, “…Where there is a will there’s a way, I can feel the determination of the Indian government. I am very optimistic about the way India will be headed. PM Modi, once mentioned that IT stands for India and Taiwan. PM, Taiwan is and will be your most trusted and reliable partner…”

Sanjay Mehrotra, CEO, Micron Technology at Semicond India stated, “I thank PM Modi for your vision to make India a global hub for semiconductors. Micron is committed to build a semiconductor assembly and test facility in Gujarat. We estimate that our project in Gujarat will create nearly 5000 direct jobs and additional 15,000 jobs in the community. We are hopeful that this investment will help catalyse other investments in the sector. Prime Minister your support for the semiconductor industry and workforce development has fostered an environment of innovation and business growth that is already creating strong results. Digital India and Make in India are creating a truly transformative energy that will continue to drive positive progress.”

The event clearly highlighted to the world that there will be new opportunities in the semiconductor industry.
