PM Modi, CM Biren Singh condemned horrifying video from Manipur; Investigation started by police

Imphal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on July 20, expressed deep shock and anguish over the harrowing video from Manipur. He strongly condemned the barbarian incident and said the culprits would not be spared. The law will take strong steps one after another. What happened with the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven. The PM reassured the nation that those responsible for such heinous acts would face the full force of the law.

“I am utterly shocked and deeply pained by the horrifying video from Manipur. This act has ashamed the civilised society. The culprits may be in numbers and whoever they may be, but the incident has ashamed the 140 crore people of the nation. I appeal to all chief ministers of the country to make law and order stronger in their respective states to protect our mothers and daughters.

It is a dark and abhorrent act with no place in our society. The perpetrators behind this gruesome act will not be spared,” PM Modi said ahead of the Monsoon session of parliament.

Manipur CM condemned the horrifying video

Manipur CM N Biren Singh said, “My hearts go out to the two women who were subjected to a deeply disrespectful and inhumane act, as shown in the distressing video that surfaced yesterday. After taking a Suo-motu cognisance of the incident immediately after the video surfaced, the Manipur Police swung to action and made the first arrest this morning.”

A thorough investigation is underway, and we will ensure strict action is taken against all the perpetrators, including considering the possibility of capital punishment. Let it be known; there is no place for such heinous acts in our society”, CM Singh added.

It should be mentioned that in a viral video circulated on July 19, it was seen that two young women were paraded naked by a group of people in a remote village in Manipur. The horrifying visuals shocked the country’s netizens, and condemnation poured from every section of society. Even Though the time and exact place of the visuals were not known, the viral video was believed to have originated from the violence-hit Manipur. A Suo-motu case was registered by the Manipur police immediately after the circulation of the video and the investigation started by Police. Police said the video was from the Thoubal district of Manipur, and the incident occurred on May 4.

All out effort to arrest culprits as regard to the viral video

Manipur police, in a statement on July 19, said that with regard to the viral video of two women paraded naked by unknown armed miscreants on May 4 2023, a case of abduction, gangrape and murder etc., was registered at Nongpok Sekmai PS (Thoubal District) against unknown armed miscreants and the investigation has been started. The State Police is making an all-out effort to arrest the culprits at the earliest.

Search Operations and Checking at Nakas

Meanwhile, the State Police and Central forces continued search operations in different vulnerable and fringe areas of both valley and hill districts. Two arms with two magazines were recovered by District Police, Imphal East, in the operation.

A total of 126 Nakas/ Checkpoints were installed in different Districts of Manipur, both in the hill and the valley. The Police detained 452 persons in connection with violations in different districts of the State.

Clashes broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023, during the solidarity march by the Tribal Students Union against the listing of the Meitei community in the ST list. Over 145 people have lost their lives in the ongoing violence, and more than 60000 people were displaced.
