Security forces in Jharkhand have recovered as many as 23 IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) planted by the proscribed Communist Party of India (Maoist) in the Chaibasa region of insurgency-hit West Singhbhum of Jharkhand.

The IEDs planted by the Maoists have been recovered during back-to-back combing operations being conducted by a joint team of personnel from Jharkhand Jaguar(JJ), CRPF, CoBRA (an elite counter insurgency unit of the CRPF) and district police for three consecutive days.

As per the reports, a joint team of JJ, CRPF, Cobra and district police launched a search operation in the Goilkera and Tonto police station limits on May 29. It’s been reported that during the combing operation, the joint team had recovered as many as five powerful IEDs planted by the Maoist.

It was learned that as many as three out of the five IEDs recovered by the joint team weighed 20 kg, 12 kg, and 6kg, respectively, while the two others weighed 5kg. All of the IEDs recovered were later diffused by the forces.

In another operation launched in the same region on May 30, the joint team unearthed as many as ten pressure IEDs, 01 IED, along with five spike holes. The BDS unit of the security forces later destroyed all the recovered IEDs.

In addition to that, the joint team BDS, CRPF, JJ and Chaibasa police had also launched a similar operation on May 1, during which as many as five pressure IEDs along with 1 Syringe IED, 1 command IED and four spike holes were recovered. It’s been reported that the forces have safely destroyed all the IEDs along with the spike holes.

Let us recall that several citizens have lost their lives in the Chaibasa region lately due to IEDs planted by the Ultras to cause harm to the search parties of the security forces. The region is occupied by dense forests, which is considered to be a hotbed of the ultras.

Recently a 50 yr old innocent man was killed after he accidentally stepped over an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) planted by the Maoist in Luiya village of Maoist-affected West Singhbhum of Jharkhand on May 25.

The fateful incident occurred when a local villager identified as Kande Laaguri, a resident of Luiya village, had gone to the nearby forest area, which falls under Tonto police station limits, to pluck tendu patta leaves when he accidentally stepped over an IED triggering a strong explosion in which he got killed. It’s been reported that the blast was so powerful that it also caused damage to the surroundings alongside injuring the deceased wife, who was also accompanying him at the time of the incident.

In another incident, a 14-year-old kid identified as Naara Koda (14), a resident of Banglasai tola of Rengrahatu who had gone to the nearby forest to pluck tendu patta leaves, was also got killed when he accidentally stepped over the IED planted by the Maoist on May 18.

14 year old kid killed in IED explosion in Rengrahattu

Earlier, in a similar incident in April, an elderly man identified is Jaina Koda, a resident of Regrahattu, was killed in a similar blast triggered by the Maoist in the Regarhattu region under Tonto police station limits. It was learnt that the blast occurred when Koda and his son had gone to the nearby forest area to collect forest produce.

In another similar kind of incident, a 60-year-old woman was also killed in an IED blast triggered by the Maoist in the forest of Jamargadha under Goilakora police station limits of West Singhbhum district in Jharkhand on April 28.

It should be noted that the security forces have launched a massive anti-naxal operation in the erstwhile Maoist-dominated Kolhan region of the district since January, though once considered to be a Maoist hotbed, the region is reported to be covered with the IEDs planted by the Maoist.

Let us tell you that the Maoist has frequently used pressure IEDs to harm the search operation parties in the Maoist-affected forest regions, which on a number of times led to the death of security personnel as well as the locals visiting the forest to collect forest produce.
