A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Balwinder Gill was shot at in Jandiala Guru near Amritsar on the night of April 16. He is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital. Punjab police is trying to locate the attackers with the help of CCTV footage.
Balwinder Gill is the General Secretary of the BJP SC Morcha. At the time of the attack, he was at his home in Jyotisar, Jandiala Guru. It was then two assailants equipped with guns arrived on a bike and opened fire at him.
According to Superintendent of Police Jugraj Singh, Gill suffered a gunshot to his jaw and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital. Gill was shifted to a private KD hospital in Amritsar after his condition worsened, Singh added.
Dr Randhir from KD Hospital said the bullet hit the BJP leader’s chin, injuring his face. He said his lower bone is also fractured in the incident. Later, he stated that the BJP leader is out of danger.
As per the sources, the attackers had their faces covered and the attack took place around 9 at night. As soon as the attackers arrived at Gill’s house his daughter came out, they asked the daughter to call her father. When Gill approached the main gate the attackers opened fire at him. The bullet ran across his jaw.
Gill was all set to contest re-elections from Jalandhar Loksabha seat. He had recently returned from Jalandhar after campaigning with senior leader Kewal Kumar.
Amritsar Rural SSP Satinder Singh reached the spot he said, The police have started an investigation into the matter. The attackers had covered their faces, but the police started scrutinising the CCTV footage to identify them, said Singh.
