Recently, the Madras High Court judge Justice GR Swaminathan said that the Constitution of India will cease to exist in the country’s demographic profile which existed at the time it was drafted is altered, while speaking at a private book launch on April 2, Bar and Bench reported.

Furthermore, he said that “the demographic profile that existed at the time of its (the Constitution’s) drafting must remain unaltered.”

“Constitution is the ultimate for everyone. If the Constitution has to remain the same, the demographic profile that existed at the time of its (the Constitution’s) formation must remain unaltered. Only if the demographic profile remains the same, will the Constitution remain the same. If the demographic profile changes, the Constitution will perish,” he added.

Furthermore, he said that the Constitution would continue to exist as long as people follow the Indian tradition and dharma. “The Constitution will continue to exist as long as the people who are under the Indian tradition and dharma remain so,” he added.

However, he said that he could not speak more on the issue as he is a judge. He said, “Being a judge, I don’t want to say anything more. Hope you understand.”

He spoke about the citizen’s duty to be mindful of the dangers society was facing. He quoted Tamil saint Andal reiterating that citizens need to wake up and see the dangers society was facing. “When Andal sang in her hymns asking people to wake up from their sleep, I believed she was calling the Indian society to wake up which was sleeping peacefully without knowing that it was under a lot of danger,” he said.
