Kerala assembly witnessed violent scenes on March 15. An incident of this sort in the legislature after several years. This time violent clashes took place in front of the offices of the Assembly Speaker.
The Watch & Ward Staff pulled and dragged the Opposition MLAs. Four MLAs and seven watch & ward personnel were injured. Opposition MLA Saneeshkumar Joseph has been admitted in the Cardiac ICU, General Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram.
Revolutionary Marxist Party’s (RMP) MLA K K Rema’s right arm was fractured. She is her party’s lone MLA; RMP is a part of the Congress-led Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF).
The turmoil started when the Speaker rejected the demand for an adjournment motion concerning the sensational issue at Chenkkotukonam, where a 16-year-old girl was assaulted, in daylight, by two youths. Opposition MLAs alleged that Speaker has been rejecting the requests for the adjournment motions one after another, sans permitting a single one, since the beginning of the current session.
As Speaker’s stand was made clear, the Opposition MLAs boycotted the house and held their Parliamentary party meeting. Immediately after the conclusion of the meeting, they sat in front of the Speaker’s offices and shouted slogans. Then mufti police, Ministers’ personal staff and ruling front MLAs came there to remove the ‘sitting’ MLAs. There started a heated exchange of words and shouts. It was followed by pulls and shoves and physical confrontations.
K K Rema is the widow of T P Chandrasekharan, rebel CPM leader, who was brutally massacred by alleged CPM killers in 2012.
