In a big achievement, Dr Hedgewar Hospital has won the award for “Most committed NGO”. The hospital is run by RSS Swayamsevaks. Its works has been recognised at the ‘Corporate Social Responsibility Summit 2023’.

Dr Hedgewar Hospital is a Medical institution located in Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra. Established by Babasaheb Ambedkar Vaidyakeeya Pratishthan, the hospital was founded by young doctors inspired by the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Vaidyakiya Pratisthan (BAVP) is a charitable trust providing quality and affordable healthcare service to the poor across India.

Today, the hospital has 300 beds and runs medical services in many specialities. The hospital runs several social upliftment programs like AIDS awareness, upliftment of women, kindergarten schools, self-employment, etc. in slum areas of Sambhaji Nagar.

BAVP which started in 1989 as a 10 bed hospital run by a group of self-committed doctors has now taken the shape of 3 Tertiary-care hospitals, and has treated more than 90 lakh patients.

BAVP has one of the biggest blood banks in Asia, a Nursing college, and social development programs running in over 600 of slums and villages across the country. It also works for the betterment of community health, women empowerment, education, natural resource management, skill development etc.

BAVP is now embarking on an ambitious project to establish a medical College in the city of Sambhaji Nagar.
The institutions under BAVP are:-

  •  Dr Hedgewar Hospital, Sambhaji Nagar
  •  Babasaheb Ambedkar Medical research society, Sambhaji Nagar
  • Dattaji Bhale Blood bank, Sambhaji Nagar
  •  Savitri Bai Phule Mahila Ekatma Samaj Mandal
  •  Dr Hedgewar nursing college, Sambhaji Nagar
  •  Swargdeo Siu-Ka-Pha multi-speciality hospital, Assam
  • Shri Guruji Rugnalaya, Nashik

Dr Hedgewar Hospital is the nucleus of this trust. It is providing excellent medical services at affordable cost to the common man. With an air of sacrifice in the complete atmosphere, doctors have been able to provide specialised care to poor patients as well could expand its activities, qualitatively & quantitatively.

As about 25 per cent of population of Sambhaji Nagar lives in slums, the NGO for their betterment is running 3 centres in these slums through which it is connected with the 30 per cent of slum population.

About 1,50,000 people are connected with social and medical activities. The NGO also has a mobile dispensary, which has been named as Shri Guruji Chalachikitsalay. In a span of 7 Years, 4,00,000 poor slum patients have been benefited by this dispensary.

Ratan Tata, while inaugurating the hospital’s new building in 2001 said, “The hospital is well equipped, without showing off its opulence. The Hospital is a project of the people, by the people and for the people. I wonder why we should not achieve similar success in other areas also!”
