On December 25, 2022, “The Kashmir Files”, a film directed by Indian Director Vivek Agnihotri has been awarded as the ‘Best Film on Human Rights’ by the LIFFT India Awards 2022. The film was selected as the best film in the category of films made on human rights.
The movie was released on March 11, 2022, and its star cast includes eminent cctors from the Indian film Industry such as Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Pathak, Pallavi Joshi etc. It has earned a total of 337.23 crores with the global viewership and is the first film to cross the 300-crore club and that too during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
The film takes the audience and viewers back to the year 1989. This was a time when the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir faced a dangerous and rising Islamic Jihad. As a result of which, a large number of Kashmiri Hindu families were forced to flee en masse from their ancestral homeland and native state.
According to some estimates, 1,00,000 people of the total 140,000 Kashmiri Hindu Families (including Pandits and Dogras) had to migrate between February and March 1990. By 2011 only 3000 families were left.
The movie was praised by viewers all over the world, but a section of Indian film fraternity, politics and liberals were not in favour of screening the movie at the theatres. Indian opposition parties and Leftist political parties tried to run down the movie.
The film was also played by the 700 strong Hindu Society members at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia. However, the Muslim faction was against the decision.
The award for the Kashmir Files came a couple of weeks after the movie was awarded Golden Film of Indian Cinema at the Indian Television Awards (ITA). The movie has been nominated for Switzerland International Film Festival.
Vivek Agnihotri has also stated that this award and the movie are dedicated to all the victims of the Kashmir Genocide. In addition, the director called the movie a “people’s film”.
Agnihotri expressed his happiness over the social media platform and said, “Happy to inform that The KashmirFiles has been awarded as ‘Best Film on Human Rights’ by LIIFT 2022. My gratitude to the people of India.”
LIFFT India is an acronym that stands for ‘Literature, Illusion, Film, Frame, Television, and Theatre’.
