New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was at his usual charm at a media interaction in Delhi on Saturday, November 19, evening and said over the decades, there was deliberate “Left conspiracy” to show indigenous Indian rulers and generals in poor light.

“Mughals never conquered northeast India… Assam and south India…Therefore, Indian history needs to be rewritten because Left historians have distorted it,” Sarma said while presenting a prelude to the three-day mega event being organised at Vigyan Bhavan, where rich tributes would be paid to Assam’s iconic medieval history hero Lachit Barphukan.

He said the Left-backed historians have made it appear as if Mughal emperors conquered ‘entire India’.

“…This was never the case,” he said.

Asked why the Congress party, which ruled for a long period both in Delhi and Assam, did not highlight the contributions of people like Lachit Barphukan, he sarcastically said, “Rahul baba ko poochne padega (Maybe we have to ask Rahul Gandhi)”.

In a recent row on Rahul’s recent remarks on Veer Savarkar, he said, “Woh pap har rahen haen… (Rahul Gandhi is only committing a sin)”.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said those who have made no contribution to the country should not question freedom fighters.

“Savarkar spent as many as 26 years in jail, those who are questioning him should tell us first and examine themselves about what they have done for the country. It is a sin to question Savarkar’s contribution, Rahul Gandhi should not do this,” said Sarma, a former Congressman in Assam.

He said it is sad that Indian rulers and dynasties from Assam and also in South and other parts of the country like Cholas have been ignored and neglected in Indian history books penned by the Left historians.

“It is said…that today I have to be the first Chief Minister in Assam to speak on these lines on our heroes like Lachit Barphukan,” Sarma said. He also said all Chief Ministers in the northeast region have contacted NCERT to include local heroes in all seven northeastern states in the school curriculum. The work is on, he said.

The Assam CM reviewed preparedness for the 400th birth anniversary of Lachit Barphukan celebrations in Delhi. Three day programme in Delhi will also be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. The three-day event will be held from Nov 23 to 25, he said.

To perpetuate the memory of the legendary warrior, the Chief Minister announced that a 125-foot bronze statue of Lachit Barphukan will be built at a cost of Rs.175 crore at his memorial at Hollongapar in Jorhat district.

On Nov19 in Delhi, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reviewed the preparations for the forthcoming 400th birth anniversary celebrations of Lachit Barphukan to be held in the national capital from November 23 to 25.

The Chief Minister instructed the officials to make all arrangements for those coming from Assam by flight and train and to place buses and vehicles at airport terminals and railway stations to take them to their destinations. Help desks will be set up to guide the guests.

Himanta also said that following the Government of Assam’s initiative, the National Defence Academy at Pune would institute a medal after Lachit Barphukan to be awarded to the best cadet and hold a memorial lecture every year.

The State Government has also taken up with the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy. (SVPNPA) authorities in Hyderabad to name a building after Lachit Barphukan and install a statue of the great warrior.

The Chief Minister also spoke on the slew of initiatives taken by the state government to perpetuate the hallowed memory of the great warrior for posterity.
