Imphal: The second and last phase of 12th Manipur legislative assembly election has concluded on Saturday with 76.04 percentage of polling till 5PM.
As many as 92 candidates including two women candidates were in the fray for 22 assembly seats spread across six electoral districts. There were 1,247 polling stations and a total of 8.38 lakh voters.
Senapati district recorded the highest 82.2 percentage of polling while Tamenglong district recorded the least 66.40 voter turnout till evening 5, according to the Chief Electoral Officer, Manipur.
Among the 22 constituencies that went to polls included Lilong, Thoubal, Wangkhem, Heirok, WangjingTentha, Khangabok, Wabagai, Kakching, Hiyanglam, Sugnoo and Jiribam are unreserved while Chandel, Tengnoupal, Phungyar, Ukhrul, Chingai, Karong, Mao, Tadubi, Tamei, Tamenglong, and Nungba are reserved for Scheduled Tribe.
Voting in 1,247 polling stations was started from 7 am and scheduled to continue till 4 pm. The first phase of the election was held on February 28 in 38 assembly constituencies.
It may be mentioned that BJP received 36.6 percent of the vote share in the last legislative assembly election held in 2017 and secured 21 seats. While INC secured 28 seats with 35.1 percent of the vote share. BJP formed an alliance government with other NDA partners NPP, NPF and Lok Jan Santi Party.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) decided to go solo in this legislative assembly election. BJP is the only political party that fielded its candidates in all 60 seats, while the Indian National Congress (INC) fielded 54 candidates. The National Democratic Alliance partners like National People’s Party (NPP), Naga People’s Front (NPF) and Janata Dal (U) fielded 38, 10 and 39 candidates respectively.
The INC with 5 other political parties – Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Forward Bloc, Revolutionary Socialist Party, and Janata Dal (Secular) forged an alliance called Manipur Progressive Secular Alliance (MPSA).
BJP and MPSA has 3 female candidates each.
With the conclusion of the Manipur legislative assembly election 2022, the BJP is optimistic to form its first-ever independent government.
The tenure of the present BJP-led government is scheduled to end on March 19, 2022. Counting and declaration of votes will be held on March 10, 2022, for both phases.
