Guwahati: Veteran Swayamsevak and prominent social worker of Assam, Dipok Kumar Barthakur, breathed his last on Wednesday (February 16) in a Chennai hospital at the age of 84.

Barthakur devoted more than six decades of his life to the service of the nation and was associated with diverse organizations like Vivekananda Kendra, Bharat Vikas Parishad, Sishu Siksha Samiti, Nagarik Samabai Bank, Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya and Balaji Temple.

His association with these organizations and the work these organizations undertook in Assam and Northeast for the betterment of society will be remembered for a long period. His contribution in education, art and theatre, healthcare, skill development, among others, will make late Barthakur immortal in NorthEast, especially in Assam.

Saddened by the demise of the veteran Swayamsevak, Sri Gurumurthy wrote, "Sad to know Dipok Da passed away. Great human being and a comfortable colleague to work with. A rare combination. A great loss to VK and to NE. Mother India has lost a dear son. I pray to Divine to give you and all family members the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss."

Late Dipok Barthakur was instrumental in setting up BJP's roots in Assam. He also served as the Vice-chairman of State Innovation and Transformation Authority (SITA) during the first BJP government in Assam.
