CM Sarma led the initiative of an accident-free New Year’s Eve which resulted in no road accidents in the state on 31st and 1st January night as per reports available.
Guwahati: After strict instruction by the Chief Minister, Assam Police conducted a special drive on the 31st night and January 1, which resulted in no road mishap on New Year’s Eve.
Assam police carried out a special drive against drunk and drive for almost one week to prevent accidents on the last day of 2021. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma himself was present on the 31st night at 2 pm and checked drunk and drive cases using a breath analyser at several places in Guwahati city.
Dr Sarma, who led the initiative of an accident-free New Year’s Eve, was out on the streets of Guwahati on Friday night to boost the morale of police and transport department personnel who were on duty to curb traffic violations.
There were no road accidents in the state on 31st and 1st January night as per reports available till Sunday afternoon. There was no curfew last night with plenty of cars on the roads. But there were no rash or drunk driving cases, CM Sarma said on Saturday.
During his visit to several locations in the city, the Chief Minister said he came across a sizable number of senior citizens driving with their families post-midnight and enjoying themselves. In the absence of drunk drivers, he said people came out with their families and had a good time.
There were over 6,800 accidents that took place in Assam, in which over 2,800 people lost their lives in 2021. According to the state transport department data, the state lost 29 lives in 69 accidents between December 31 and January 1 last year.
