As of Friday (December 31), 22762 organisations had valid registration, which has now come down to 16829by Saturday (January 1).

About 6000 organisations, including Oxfam, Jamia Milia, Indian Youth Centres Trust, Indian Medical Association, lost their FCRA registration on Saturday (January 1). The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had 22762 valid FCRA registrations as of Friday (December 31), which came down to 16829 valid FCRA registrations by Saturday (January 1). The MHA said that the organisations' FCRA registrations were invalidated as either they did not apply for renewal or were denied on the ground of lapses.

On Friday (December 31), the MHA had extended the validity of FCRA registration of those NGOs that were expiring between September 29, 2020, and September 30, 2021, until March 31, 2022.

Under the rules of the MHA, it is mandatory for any organisation which wishes to receive foreign funding to register under FCRA. Initially, the registration is valid for five years and can be renewed if the record of the previous five years is in order. First enacted in 1976, it was amended in 2010. The FCRA provisions were enacted to ensure there is no foreign interference in the country's political matters.

Legal rights firm, Legal Rights Observatory, has been consistently raising how organisations like Oxfam have been misusing foreign funds to destabilise India.

In a post on Saturday (January 1), LRO said, "#VICTORY Finally killer of Assam Tea, India hater @OxfamIndia looses its #FCRA license for massive #FCRAViolation. LRO had lodged many complaints against #Oxfam for funding #DelhiRiot accused via @CEStudies. Amazing news on very 1st day of 2022. Thanks @AmitShah @HMOIndia for it!"

In September last year, LRO had exposed how Harsh Mander's Center for Equity Studies and Oxfam India were misusing funds to fuel Delhi Anti-Hindu riots.

LRO had said, "Harsh Mander @harsh_mander's @CEStudies recvd crores from #French n #Danish Catholics; Requested @HMOIndia to cancel #FCRA registration of CES n @OxfamIndia for misusing funds to fuel #DelhiRiots #Hinduphobia n to kill #AssamTea at the behest of foreign groups!"

"Oxfam's @OxfamIndia CEO Amitabh Behar @AmitabhBehar is treasurer of Mander's NGO Centre for Equity Studies @CEStudies, who was first to lash out at @AmitShah for #FCRABill2020 bcoz his interests were going to be badly hit once #FCRA is amended. Reports says Oxfam funds CES," it had added.
