Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) scholar Danish Rahim has appealed to PM Modi to intervene in the matter and save his hard work of five years.
The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) scholar Danish Rahim wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to save his PhD degree, which the university awarded in 2020.
Rahim alleged that the university wanted his PhD degree back because he praised PM Modi in December last year on a news channel.
On December 22 last year, PM Modi virtually addressed the centennial celebrations of the university. For the first time in over five decades, a prime minister had attended an AMU event. PM Modi had also released commemorative postal stamps on the occasion.
In the letter, Danish has alleged that after his public praise of the prime minister, “the chairman department of linguistics called me and warned me not to praise PM in public as this is against our culture…he says further that if you redo, I will take action against you.”
The notice to deposit the degree was issued after this threat.
Requesting PM Modi to intervene, Rahim wrote, “Since I took 5 years of hard work to get this reputed degree, how come I can return my degree to AMU that too for praising the PM of 138 crores.”
He further adds, “If AMU cancels my PhD degree, my whole career will be at stake. Therefore, I request you to please intervene in this matter and direct the AMU administration not to ask me to return PhD degree.”
Responding to Rahim’s allegations, the AMU spokesperson Shafey Kidway said, “The allegations are totally baseless. He did his MA & PhD in LAM (Language of Advertising & Marketing) course of Department of Linguistics, which also offers PhD degree in Linguistics. Since he did his MA in LAM, he should get PhD degree in LAM.”
“By mistake, he was given the PhD degree in Linguistics. The mistake will be rectified… This incident has nothing to do with politics,” Prof Shafey Kidway added.
