MoS For Home said persons covered under the Citizenship Amendment Act could apply for citizenship after the rules are notified.

 

New Delhi: 4177 people were granted Indian citizenship in the last five years, the Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday (November 30). 

Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai, said in a written reply to a question that 10645 people have applied for Indian citizenship in the last five years.

227 were from the United States, 7782 from Pakistan, 795 from Afghanistan, and 184 from Bangladesh. The Minister said that 1106 people were given Indian citizenship in 2016, while 817 of them got it in 2017, 628 people in 2018, 987 people in 2019 and 639 people in 2020.

He also said that from 2017 to September 30, 2021, about six lakh Indians have renounced the country's citizenship and accepted the citizenship of foreign countries. About 1,33,83,718 citizens of India are living outside India in other countries.

Responding to questions, Mr Rai also said that the CAA was notified on December 12, 2019, and came into force on January 10, 2020. Persons covered under the Citizenship Amendment Act can apply for citizenship after the rules are notified.

The government has also said that no decision has been taken yet for the nationwide NRC.
