Four members of a Dalit family were murdered on November 23. The Opposition and the vested interests tried to project it an Upper Caste crime on Dalits. The police have arrested an accused who is also a Dalit.

Four members of a Dalit family, including a 10-year-old son, were brutally murdered in Prayagraj’s Mohanganj Gohari on November 23. The bodies of the victims, which included husband, wife, son and daughter, were found on November 25 in their home when the neighbours of the victims raised the alarm. The police arrested eight of the eleven accused Upper Caste members named in the FIR.

The Opposition political leaders and the vested interests immediately floated the incident as an Upper Caste crime on Dalits in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress leader Priyanka Vadra visited Gohari to meet victims’ relatives and accused the Yogi Adityanath government of protecting Upper Caste accused. The Samajwadi Party (SP), the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) too tried to create social unrest by giving the crime a caste angle.

The police investigation has revealed that a spurned lover named Pawan Kumar Saroj, a Dalit, planned and executed the murder. The police team investigating the crime confirmed that the young girl, aged 24, was found naked, and there was male semen on her genitals. The police have also recovered the blood-stained clothes of the accused. The police have also detained two accomplices of the accused. The police claimed Pawan had confessed his crime.

After the police started the investigation in the case on November 25, they came across the WhatsApp messages of the young victim, which suggested Pawan was chasing the young girl. But she was rejecting his advances.

Without ascertaining the facts of the case, the Opposition and the vested interests tried to fuel the caste angle in the crime. The assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh are due in two-three months. The Opposition and the vested interests are trying to create an image that the Yogi Adityanath Government of Uttar Pradesh is “anti-Dalit”.

Similar attempts were made in September last year when a 19-year-old Dalit was gang-raped and murdered in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district. The Popular Front of India (PFI) ‘activist’ Siddique Kappan is in jail for trying to create a social rift. The Uttar Pradesh Police arrested him last year when he was on his way to Hathras.
