Guwahati: Underwater tunnel project in the river Brahmaputra Connecting Nagaon and Sonitpur district of Assam is taking shape. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) will carry out the strategically vital project for the Indian defence sector. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma discussed the latest development on the proposed underwater tunnel in the river Brahmaputra in New Delhi on Thursday (November 11).
Speaking to the media after the meeting with the Home Minister, CM, Dr. Sarma said that BRO has completed the first project report of the proposed underwater tunnel. Other aspects of the huge project are being discussed at the ministry level. The proposed underwater tunnel will have both rail-road pass under the mighty river Brahmaputra, the CM said. It should be worth mentioning that, once completed, the underwater river tunnel will be a huge asset for the Indian Army.

Assam chief minister, who has been in New Delhi for the last 3 days, told the media that the defence ministry has also granted permission to set up five new military schools in Assam. The state government has identified land in Dhemaji, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong, Cachar and Kokrajhar districts to set up the military schools.
CM Dr. Sarma also met Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi and informed that the DPR of the proposed 35 kilometre elevated corridor in Kaziranga National Park, Ring Road in Guwahati and Guwahati- Kuruwa bridge over the Brahmaputra had been submitted to the ministry by concerned authorities. The ministry will evaluate the DPR soon, and hopefully, it will be finalised in a shorter period.
