Guwahati: Thanking the development agenda of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the resounding victory in by polls in Assam, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that BJP is not in appeasement politics, but still significant amount of Muslim voters have voted for the saffron party and its alliance partner. Talking to the media, CM Sarma said, in Bhabanipur, Tamulpur and Gossaigaon constituencies in lower Assam, a significant number of minority voters supported the BJP and UPPL, in favour of the ongoing developments in the state.
The by-election was held in 10 constituencies of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram and the NDA alliance swept all the seats. Dr. Sarma said it shows the faith of the people of North East on the development vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Interestingly, the CM said that he is sure that one day he will see there will be 126 BJP MLAs in the Assam assembly in his lifetime. Terming the win of BJP candidate in the Bhabanipur constituency as a remarkable victory, Dr. Sarma said the birthplace of the first martyr of Assam Agitation Khargeswar Talukdar was under AIUDF MLA for the last three terms and it was a setback for the greater Assamese society.
But the development works of the BJP made people understand the need of a proper representative and significant numbers of the minority voters also voted for the BJP candidate this time. So the BJP candidate Phanidhar Talukdar managed to win in the minority dominated constituency after 2006 by a huge margin of over 25 thousand votes, he said. In Mariani constituency the BJP candidate Rupjyoti Kurmi won by over 40 thousand votes and in Thowra BJP'S Sushanta Borgohain won by over 31 thousand votes.
Both the UPPL candidates in Tamulpur and Gossaigaon won by a margin of over 25 thousand votes and in both the constituencies numbers of minority voters voted for the BJP alliance. He also said that many opposition MLAs are showing their willingness to join the BJP, but the party will decide after accessing the situation only.
