Biswas quit the Congress six days after the All India Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev left the party.

Agartala: Series of setbacks from Northeast continues for the Congress party. In yet another setback to the party, Tripura state President Pijush Biswas resigned from Congress on Saturday (August 21).

Biswas was the state Congress president from December 2019 after the former president, Royal scion Pradyut Bikram Dev Barman's resign. Biswas quit the Congress six days after the All India Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev left the party and joined Trinamool Congress on August 16.

Biswas sent his resignation letter to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and said the decision was personal. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Dev told the media in Silchar that she is in touch with Biswas over the phone and discussed the Congress’ weak organisational matters and Tripura politics.

Sources say that Pijush Biswas, who is close to Tipra Motha party chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barman, is maintaining close relations with both Trinamool Congress and the regional party.

Biswas is the fifth important Congress leader in the northeastern states to quit the party in the last three months. In Assam, two senior MLAs Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Birgohain, along with many leaders, joined BJP recently.

In Manipur, state party president Govindas Konthoujam, a six-time MLA, resigned from the party and joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party last month.
