Aligarh and Mainpuri Zilla Panchayat passed the resolution to rename as Harigarh and Mayan Nagar .
Aligarh Zilla Panchayat passed a resolution to rename Aligarh as Harigarh. The resolution was passed on Monday (August 16) without any opposition, with 20 out 0f 72 members in attendance.
The proposal has been passed on to the State Government for approval.
Another proposal of renaming Aligarh airport after former BJP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh was passed. Kalyan Singh was the State's Chief Minister during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement.
On the same day, Mainpuri Zilla Panchayat passed a resolution to rename Mainpuri as Mayan Nagar after sage Mayan, who founded the present day Mainpuri. The proposal was passed with 23 in favour and two opposing it.
Mainpuri is a stronghold of Samajwadi Party (SP) patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, who won five elections from the constituency.
The Yogi Adityanath government has already changed the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj, Faizabad to Ayodhya and Mughalsarai to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar.
