He breathed his last on Friday (June 18) night at PGIMER Chandigarh. The country mourns the death of a legend.
Within a week of the death of his wife Nirmal Kaur, legendary sprinter Milkha Singh passed away Friday night (June 18) at PGIMER Chandigarh. He was 91.
The legendary sprinter had tested positive for Covid-19 on May 19. He was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Mohali. Later, he was shifted to PGIMER Chandigarh.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of the legend.
He wrote on the microblogging platform Twitter, “In the passing away of Shri Milkha Singh Ji, we have lost a colossal sportsperson, who captured the nation’s imagination and had a special place in the hearts of countless Indians. His inspiring personality endeared him to millions. Anguished by his passing away.”
The Prime Minister added, “I had spoken to Shri Milkha Singh Ji just a few days ago. Little did I know that it would be our last conversation. Several budding athletes will derive strength from his life journey. My condolences to his family and many admirers all over the world.”
President Ram Nath Kovind condoled the death of the ace sprinter. He wrote, “The passing of sporting icon Milkha Singh fills my heart with grief. The story of his struggles and strength of character will continue to inspire generations of Indians. My deepest condolences to his family members, and countless admirers.”
Many other dignitaries expressed their shock and grief at the passing away of Milkha Singh.
The Padmasree awardee was a four-time Asian Games gold medalist. He represented India in 1956, 1960, and 1964 Olympics. In the 1960 Rome Olympics, he was placed fourth in the 400 m contest, his most memorable performance.
He was born in 1929 in Govindpura, now in Pakistan.
