Myanmarese condemn Beijing for acknowledging the military coup

Guwahati: Democracy aspiring Myanmarese people represented by over 425 civil society organizations lately expressed their strongest condemnations against the People’s Republic of China as the Beijing administration acknowledged general Min Aung Hlaing and his so-called State Administrative Council (SAC) to be leaders of Myanmar.

“By issuing public statements referring to Mr Hlaing as the leader of Myanmar and also inviting the SAC foreign minister to Chongqing at the China – ASEAN special foreign minister’s meeting as well as pledging economic aids to it as part of solutions to the southeast Asian nation’s current political crisis, Beijing grossly interfered in Myanmar’s domestic affairs and posed a grave threat to the regional stability,” said a protest note.

Mentionable is that the National Unity Government of Myanmar earlier noted in its letter to China’s foreign minister Wang Yi that Mr Hlaing attempted to take power with a military coup on 1 February 2021. It also asserted that Mr Hlaing is not the legitimate leader of Myanmar and he used violence to control the ongoing pro-democracy movements which has resulted in the killings of nearly one thousand Myanmarese protestors and displacing over 100,000 people.

China claims that its efforts aim to stabilize the region and prevent any further violence. However the reality remains that any actions in support of the military only grant it space to continue its war against the people of Myanmar. The only way to address the current crisis is to respect the will of the Myanmar electorates and re-seat the elected government virtually led by Nobel laurate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

“China should require that Min Aung Hlaing immediately cease all violence, release all political prisoners, and engage in political dialogue towards a durable solution for the country’s future,” said the statement, signed and endorsed by civil society groups (whose names were not disclosed due to serious security concerns), adding that the Chinese government should engage the representation of the legitimate government, civil society and ethnic armed organizations to identify a sustained solution.
